Locarno Unveils Lineup for Pardi di Domani Section, Its “Breeding Ground for Experimentation”

Films by up-and-coming directors as well as seasoned masters such as Neo Sora, Marta Popivoda, Abdellah Taïa, Salvatore Mereu, and Radu Muntean are included in the Pardi di Domani program of the 2025 Locarno Film Festival, which features short and medium-length productions. This lineup was revealed on Tuesday.

The Locarno Film Festival describes its Pardi di Domani section as a crucial area for artistic exploration and groundbreaking cinematic poetry, and as a key component in its goal to encourage dialogue between generations and traditions, and to nurture filmmakers who will shape the future of cinematic expression.

This year’s 78th edition of Locarno showcases approximately 40 world premieres distributed over three competitions and 25 nations, giving viewers a sneak peek at potential directions that future cinema may follow.

In both the International Competition and the National Competition, new voices discover their initial international platform (international for the former and Swiss for the latter). Meanwhile, the Director’s Short Contest underscores how filmmakers skilled in lengthy narratives find creative power and inspiration from short-form storytelling, as highlighted by the festival.

This year’s lineup features a diverse group of talented individuals such as Mongolian filmmaker Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir, Italian director Salvatore Mereu, renowned Japanese filmmaker Neo Sora, acclaimed Moroccan writer Abdellah Taïa, Serbo-Croatian duo Matija Gluščević and Dušan Zorić, Laotian director Mattie Do, Canada’s Ryan McKenna, Romanian filmmaker Radu Muntean, and Katharina Huber, the German director who won the best emerging director award at Locarno in 2023 for her feature “Ein schöner Ort”.

Giona A. Nazzaro, director of the Locarno Film Festival, stated that the Pardi di Domani program has not only garnered a steadily increasing fanbase but has also become one of the must-see events for enthusiasts of short films. It serves as a playground for innovation and creative exhilaration, consistently earning accolades and launching authors poised to leave an indelible impact on modern cinema.

Eddie Bertozzi, head of the Pardi di Domani selection committee, praised a collection of daring films that immerse us in today’s most significant struggles. He further commented: “This program showcases both established artists and promising newcomers, fostering a conversation between various cinematic narratives and extending an invitation to reconsider identity, bodies, and conflict from unique and thought-provoking angles.”
