Trigger warning: This article mentions death.
Initially, Babil Khan didn’t consider acting as an obvious path due to his lineage – his parents being renowned actor Irrfan Khan and writer Sutapa Sikdar. In a recent interview, the star of Qala shared that his father was actually quite apprehensive when he disclosed his intentions to enter the world of cinema. Here’s why this was the case.
Initially aiming to be a top-tier sports figure, young star Babil Khan encountered an injury which led him to enroll in a filmmaking program in the United Kingdom instead. Yet, he hesitated on finding the right moment to disclose his ambition of venturing into the world of cinema to his father.
In his conversation with PTI, The Railway Men actor explained, “I’ve always been hesitant to share this, but here goes: As a son of such a great man, there was an ego-driven fear that if I failed, it would reflect poorly on him. However, I’ve come to terms with it, and what I didn’t realize was that he was afraid for me because he knew the care he had put into raising me, and I was a sensitive child.
As an ardent admirer, I must say that while Babil has certainly brought some unforgettable characters to life, it’s become clear to him that his true love lies in the realm of performance – be it acting or music. He humbly acknowledges his shy demeanor when it comes to singing but is eager to delve deeper into this side of himself once he’s gained a bit more experience in acting.
In the very same conversation, the actor from Friday Night Plan shared memories of spending time with his father after college, who later passed away. Unbeknownst to him, neither Irrfan Khan nor his mother, Sutapa Sikdar, anticipated that such a loss was imminent. Regrettably, fate had other ideas.
Despite successfully overcoming cancer, the renowned Bollywood actor passed away in April 2020 due to complications from an ordinary infection. His son, Babil, poignantly remarked, “He had conquered cancer, so even this final hurdle is a testament to his strength.
During this period, Babil started being more active on social media, posting stories about his father and addressing his grief in public. However, as his online following grew, he discovered that social media could be quite harmful and easily disrupt one’s mental tranquility. Consequently, he decided to limit his frequent visits to these platforms.
In terms of his job, he’s currently anticipating the launch of his next movie titled “Logout”. This intriguing cyber thriller will premiere on the streaming platform Zee5 on the 18th of April, 2025.
