As a seasoned traveler who has ventured to countless breathtaking destinations around the world, let me tell you that the city of Essaouira, Morocco, is undeniably one of the most enchanting places I’ve ever laid my eyes on. The beaches, the wind, and the overall atmosphere are simply captivating, making it no surprise that it played a pivotal role in the romantic drama “Lonely Planet.
In the leading roles for Netflix’s upcoming romantic drama, “Lonely Planet,” are Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern. The story revolves around Katherine Loewe, a respected author, who journeys to Morocco in an attempt to escape her tumultuous divorce and conquer writer’s block. Simultaneously at the same resort is Owen Brophy, accompanied by his girlfriend, aspiring author Lily Kemp. As their relationship strains further, they come to the harsh realization that their lifestyles are no longer compatible. Despite their personal challenges, Katherine and Owen discover a sense of solace in each other, gradually developing feelings for one another as they tentatively explore the possibility of a new romance together.
From the get-go, the Netflix film faced intense public examination, and it didn’t take long before flaws were unearthed. Yet, not all aspects of the movie deteriorated. For instance, the age-gap romantic flick handled the theme of intergenerational love quite effectively by depicting the older female character as equally appealing and minimizing the emphasis on the age difference. What truly stood out, however, was Lonely Planet’s magnificent choice of filming locations.
The Vibrant Culture of Marrakesh
Despite Lonely Planet being overly lengthy, filled with familiar storylines, and lacking convincing chemistry between its main characters, Netflix’s new romantic drama still leaves one in awe due to its breathtaking filming locations. Regardless of Lonely Planet’s Rotten Tomato disappointments, the movie undeniably showcases some stunning visuals, all thanks to Morocco’s captivating urban landscapes.
Without a doubt, the city of Marrakesh is the most iconic filming location for Lonely Planet. Renowned for its enchanting riads – traditional homes, high-end eateries, and magnificent hammams (bathhouses), Marrakesh oozes culture. The Netflix movie skillfully showcases some of the city’s most striking features, including its awe-inspiring architecture and bustling markets. Notably, characters Katherine and Owen are depicted exploring one such market in the city, mirroring the city’s fast-paced lifestyle and vibrant culture.
The Blue Beauty of Chefchaouen
Without a doubt, another captivating and iconic destination featured by Lonely Planet is the picturesque town of Chefchaouen. Nestled in Morocco’s northwestern region, this small city is renowned for its striking blue-painted buildings that draw tourists from far and wide. Scenes filmed in Chefchaouen not only offer visually stunning vistas but also carry significant importance. It was here that Katherine and Owen began to understand each other more deeply and nurture feelings for one another, marking the start of their romantic journey together. Chefchaouen is where their love story began to flourish.
Because Hemsworth and Dern had a chance to stay for several days at the location, it gave them ample time to become one with their surroundings and develop a strong bond with the place. Notably, Lonely Planet may not convey a convincing sense of intimacy overall; however, the scenes in Chefchaouen appear to have the most romantic chemistry in the film, possibly due to the fact that both actors felt at ease there.
The Sea-Side of Essaouira
“Like many movies showcasing stunning landscapes, Lonely Planet too has some breathtaking beaches that stir a longing for travel. In this romantic drama film starring Hemsworth and Dern, the couple visits Essaouira, a city on Morocco’s western coast. Known for its picturesque beach and windy conditions, Essaouira is a favorite among tourists and locals alike who enjoy kitesurfing there.
In the latest Netflix film, Katherine and Owen are depicted taking a touching stroll along a beautiful, expansive stretch of sandy shoreline as their feelings toward one another deepen. At times, they’re captured wandering through a city alley under the cover of night, sharing a tender kiss. Moreover, Essaouira’s enchantment doesn’t stop there; scenes featuring the couple sitting near the beachfront captivate viewers with their heartfelt conversations and shared moments.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I must say, the Moroccan city we fell in love in was an enchanting place, where our bond deepened to unimaginable levels. However, it’s also the location that momentarily shattered our connection. In a heartbreaking twist of events, as we were admiring the stunning view, someone snatched Katherine’s bag right from behind her, containing years of her written work. Despite my desperate pursuit after the thief, I couldn’t recover it. The loss of her precious work left Katherine utterly devastated, and she made an instant decision to return home, without me by her side.
Remote Filming Locations and Los Angeles
In addition to the primary filming locations highlighted by Lonely Planet, the movie also showcases a few other unique spots. Although these locations may not hold as much significance as the others, they are still worth mentioning. Scenes were captured in the Moroccan countryside, although the specific destinations of Katherine and Owen during their journey remain unclear. At one point, their tour guide’s vehicle malfunctioned, leaving them stranded. However, a relative of the driver arrived to pick them up and led them to his secluded village home.
Towards the end of the movie, a fresh shooting location – Los Angeles – is introduced, marking the return of the story to the United States. Here, Katherine delivers a speech to a large crowd about her latest book. To celebrate, she and her friends hit a local bar, where they unexpectedly ran into Owen. Despite his initial desire for personal space, Katherine pursued him and revealed her feelings. In the bustling streets of LA, she admitted to him that she had allowed fear of comfort to rule in Morocco, and confessed that she was apprehensive about facing him due to her past behavior.
By the close of the film, Lonely Planet concluded in a heartwarming manner as Katherine and Owen shared a passionate kiss in Los Angeles, keeping their future together up to interpretation for viewers. The film’s breathtaking backdrops, provided by Lonely Planet, undoubtedly lend an enchanting atmosphere to the movie. Don’t forget to catch this visually stunning production on Netflix.
