Longlegs Star Maika Monroe Wants to Take on Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street Reboot

As a huge horror fan and avid follower of Maika Monroe’s impressive career, I can’t help but be excited by her recent statement about wanting to bring the iconic horror franchise “A Nightmare on Elm Street” back to life. Monroe, who has proven herself as one of horror’s most promising scream queens with a string of critically and financially successful films under her belt, is no stranger to the genre. From her breakout role in “It Follows” to her recent success with “Longlegs,” Monroe’s passion for horror shines through in every project she undertakes.

Maika Monroe has made a name for herself as one of horror films’ rising stars since her breakout role in “It Follows” in 2014. The success of her recent horror film, “Longlegs,” which grossed over $20 million, has significantly boosted her influence and proven that Monroe-led horror movies can be both critically acclaimed and financially successful. With this newfound clout, there’s a classic horror franchise that Monroe is eager to revive.

These films – “It Follows,” “The Guest,” “Greta,” “Villains,” “Watcher,” and “Longlegs” – are all unique productions that have garnered either positive critical reception or financial prosperity, or a combination of both. Now, Monroe aims to replicate this success with “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Monroe is convinced that “Nightmare” is her next big project as she expressed her dream franchise to Collider by asking, “What film series would I love to be a part of?”

“I can confirm I’ve seen ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street.’ It was an experience I had at a rather young age, and the concept of the film – where danger lurks during sleep – left me deeply unsettled. Sleep itself became something to be feared, which is a truly terrifying thought. My fascination with it grew into an obsession, making my desire to contribute to this series all the more strong.”

Monroe isn’t the sole current scream queen expressing interest in tackling Freddy Krueger; Samara Weaving from “Ready or Not” has also expressed her desire for this role. Collider shared this information with Monroe during an interview, and her response was positively excited.

“Let’s go! We gotta get this out there. We gotta start pitching this.”

As a longtime horror film enthusiast and fan of the “Nightmare on Elm Street” series, I can’t help but feel frustrated by the ongoing rights debacle surrounding Freddy Krueger and his terrifying saga. Having grown up watching these films, they hold a special place in my heart and have provided countless hours of thrills and chills.

It’s quite a challenge to revive this franchise, as its previous attempts have met with failure. The movies “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child” are just two examples of the series’ less successful entries, and the 2010 reboot is widely regarded as the weakest. To keep this intellectual property alive, the script really needs to be exceptional.

With Monroe joining the project and Flanagan’s potential involvement in directing, there is a greater chance that a new “Nightmare on Elm Street” film will come to fruition. Both Weaving and Monroe have expressed interest in the property, while Flanagan has even discussed possibilities with Heather Langenkamp. Given the recent success of David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” films, now could be an ideal moment to revive Freddy Krueger for a new cinematic outing.
