2013 saw the release of the period drama Lootera, which was skillfully directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. The movie draws some inspiration from O. Henry’s 1907 short story, The Last Leaf. Following Udaan, this film marked the second production in the director’s career, having been released in 2010 and garnering widespread acclaim.
The movie’s story unfolds in the 1950s, with the Zamindari Abolition Act serving as a scenic backdrop. It revolves around a moving love tale between a young swindler who feigns being an archaeologist (portrayed by Ranveer Singh) and the Bengali zamindar’s daughter (Sonakshi Sinha). However, the narrative takes a dramatic twist as the conman’s deceit is exposed, and the girl’s health starts to falter.
Under the guidance of stars Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha, the film Lootera also included significant performances by Barun Chanda, Vikrant Massey, Arif Zakaria, Divya Dutta, and Adil Hussain.
