The current state of video games based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” could use some improvement. Despite this, fans still recall the 2023 Gollum game as a topic of mockery online, since it seemed unnecessary and unwelcome. However, there have been minor advancements in the handling of the license, with Tales of the Shire appearing to be an enjoyable game similar to Animal Crossing-style titles.
Despite all that has come since, fans still long for the times when games such as The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King surpassed our wildest expectations. It wasn’t particularly innovative, but it was tough to find fault with a solid action game that accurately portrayed the movie’s narrative.
The epic film “The Return of the King” commenced with a powerful start, leveraging Gandalf’s thrilling appearance from the finale of “The Two Towers” as its opening act. This extraordinary movie adaptation, for a character over a century old, saw Gandalf the White displaying an impressive prowess against Orcs, wielding his sword and spells to lay waste to anything in his path. It’s an effective means of introducing players to the game’s controls.
Following the exhilarating opening sequence, as a gamer immersed in the world of Middle Earth, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King offers me three distinct narratives to embark on. I can choose to continue with Gandalf, assisting him in prolonging Frodo’s journey through the war. Alternatively, I can join forces with Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, attempting to rally an army of the undead to our cause. Lastly, I find myself taking on the role of Samwise Gamgee, helping Frodo navigate Mount Doom while battling countless spiders along the way.
As a devoted player, I’ve discovered three diverse routes in this game, ranging from brutal orc-infested battlefields to spine-tingling haunted dungeons. While the core gameplay primarily involves slaying creatures with occasional objectives, it’s fair to say that some might find the gameplay repetitive at times. However, the vast array of combos to master and engaging combat mechanics have kept most fans, including myself, thoroughly entertained.
Additionally, the user-friendly control scheme of The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was another advantage. This setup included two buttons for swift and powerful attacks, a third for managing crowds with kicks, a fourth to pin enemies that had fallen, and a simple sequence for using bows and arrows. Due to this straightforward design, it allowed multiple players to engage in enjoyable co-op play on the couch.

Playing Return of the King in split-screen mode was an additional incentive to continue playing, although it shined more after completing the game. Initially, some stages were designed for solo play, while others could be tackled cooperatively with a friend. However, only upon finishing the game did the developers reveal that couch co-op would be available for all levels and any character could interact across their individual storylines.
The enhancement in the post-game cooperation of Return of the King became more engaging due to the introduction of additional characters following the game’s completion. Previously, players could only control Gandalf, Sam, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. However, upon finishing the game, they gained access to Merry, Pippin, Frodo, and Faramir for all subsequent levels. This expansion in character selection allowed players to level up more characters and experiment with new combos. Although these new characters were essentially reskins of existing ones, the visual differences provided an element of replayability.
It’s no wonder that Lord of the Rings: Return of the King is often hailed as one of the finest games in this series, given its abundance of content. Unfortunately, it’s a pity that these games haven’t been re-released for multiplayer gaming sessions on the couch. However, we can’t disclose the means to play these games right now.
In terms of the series’ gaming offerings, Shadow of Mordor stands tall as the peak; however, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King holds a noble second place.
