In an exclusive interview with JoBlo at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, Wood expressed his eagerness to reprise his role in the Oscar-winning franchise, which is already reuniting most of the original creative team, led by Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis.

At Fantasia film festival, Wood attended the debut of his latest comedy-adventure titled “Bookworm” – a production filmed in New Zealand, known for hosting iconic films like “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” series. Title “The Search for Gollum” is inspired by one of the additional parts in J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel, focusing on Gandalf and Aragon’s quest to find Gollum, who holds crucial information about the One Ring’s whereabouts. The script will be penned by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, with Andy Serkis taking on dual roles as he acts as Gollum and oversees the film’s direction. No definitive casting decisions have been made public; however, Viggo Mortensen and Ian McKellen have expressed their readiness to reprise their earlier characters.

As a big fan of Mortensen and McKellan’s work in the Lord of the Rings films, I can understand their cautious approach to reprising their iconic roles. Mortensen shared, “If I were to consider returning to the role, it would only be if I felt I truly fit the character once again.” And McKellan expressed his interest, albeit with some uncertainty, stating, “There’s no script, no offer, and no definite plans yet, but if I’m still around, I’d be intrigued by the prospect.” However, it seems McKellan may have more information than he’s letting on as he mentioned growing a long beard lately.

I’m thrilled that “The Hunt for Gollum” is set to hit theaters in 2026! Although no specific production start date has been disclosed yet, insiders suggest that this anticipated film will be shot in the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand.
