Lorde recently unveiled her latest track titled “What Was That,” which marks the debut single for her forthcoming fourth studio album.
Lorde, the New Zealand musician, hinted at her new track on her first TikTok post dated April 9th. In this video, she showed herself strolling and sprinting through New York City with the song’s lyrics audible in the background. Her lyrics included: “Since I was 17, I gave you everything / Now we wake from a baby, well baby, what was that?” Soon after, she revealed the title of the track as “What Was That,” which she has won two Grammy Awards for.
A few days ago, Lorde performed her new song “What Was That” for hundreds of spectators in Washington Square Park. She danced on a wooden stage while the music blared from a speaker nearby. Initially, she had requested fans to gather at 7 p.m., but the event was unexpectedly halted by police because she didn’t have the necessary permit. However, fans lingered, and later that evening, Lorde returned to give them a sneak peek of the song.
Lorde subtly hinted at her upcoming new phase by sharing a voice message with her followers. In this message, she expressed gratitude for their “understanding” and suggested that “these could be our final shared moments, which seems surreal yet fitting.
Lorde expressed her readiness with gratitude for everyone’s patience. She acknowledged the support she’s received and could feel it. She hinted that what’s coming up will be wild, something they can hardly imagine.
The news follows nearly four years without new music from Lorde. Her latest album, “Solar Power,” was released in August 2021.
Even though she hasn’t released any music in recent years, Lorde still made a significant impact by collaborating with Charli XCX on the remix of “Girl, so confusing”. This collaboration quickly gained popularity and led Charli to invite Lorde to perform together during her 2025 Coachella performance and her September 23 stop in New York City for the Sweat tour.
