Lorde Reveals She Discussed Her “Broadening” Gender Identity With Chappell Roan

Lorde is opening up about her gender identity. 

In an interview with Rolling Stone prior to her upcoming album “Virgin”, the singer-songwriter spoke candidly with her close friend Chappell Roan about gender issues. When asked by the magazine how she identifies, she replied that Chappell had posed the same question to her earlier. She went on to say that Chappell inquired if she now identifies as nonbinary.

Lorde stated, ‘I’m female most of the time, but there are moments when I identify as male,'” she explained. “She acknowledged that this explanation might not be completely clear, but she has a strong aversion to being defined or categorized.”

*”Lorde said, ‘I’m usually a girl, but sometimes I feel like a guy,'” she clarified. “She admitted it’s a bit confusing, but she hates being put into a specific box.

The artist known for “What Was That” has made it clear that she continues to identify as a cisgender woman using “she/her” pronouns. However, she also mentioned that she finds herself somewhere in the middle when it comes to gender identity. Yet, Lorde emphasized that this aspect of her identity is not necessarily radical or groundbreaking.

Lorde acknowledges the bravery of these young individuals, but it’s not straightforward, she explained. She clarifies that while she can express her thoughts privately, she doesn’t want to encroach on those who are more affected by the issues at hand because, compared to them, she enjoys a relatively secure position as a wealthy, cisgender, white woman.

Virgin Media plans to delve deeper into Lorde’s perspective on her gender identity, as they have additionally disclosed that the opening track of her new album contains the lyric: “Some days I’m a woman / Some days I’m a man.

She remembered a particular instance where she acknowledged her gender fluidity while trying on a pair of men’s trousers at a shop. Lorde shared a photo with one of her album’s main collaborators, Jim-E Stack, and he responded, “I want the music to reflect the person in this photo.” This was prior to any expansion of my gender identity whatsoever, she noted.

On June 27th, Virgin is set to make its appearance, and the album’s cover art, which depicts a blue x-ray image of a pelvis with a zipper, belt buckle, and IUD, offers a sneak peek into the record’s content.

In late 2023, Lorde discussed her choice to stop using birth control while writing “What Was That” and “Man of the Year.” The singer explained that choosing not to use birth control felt like she had severed a connection with the controlled femininity she had been associated with, which in turn led to new opportunities opening up for her.
