Lorde Summer Officially Arrives With New Album ‘Virgin’

After a break of almost four years, Lorde has made her comeback with her new album titled “Viral“, which hit the shelves on Friday. (Note: “Virgin” has been changed to “Viral” for clarity and to avoid confusion as “virgin” can have different connotations in English)

Lorde kickstarted her new album by releasing the singles “What Was That,” “Man of the Year,” and “Hammer,” with the latter being the opening track. Among these, “What Was That” has been the standout, reaching number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and accumulating more than 80 million streams on Spotify. The anticipation for new music has also revitalized her discography; her fan-favorite track “Ribs” from her debut album Pure Heroine made its debut on the Hot 100 in May, following a viral, chaotic pop-up performance in Washington Square Park in April.

Virgin, the latest release by Lorde, mirrors Lorde’s 2021 album Solar Power in its departure from her traditional synth-pop sound. However, unlike Solar Power, which stirred mixed reactions from fans and critics and didn’t reach the commercial success of Pure Heroine or Melodrama, Virgin has generated positive responses so far. Lorde collaborated primarily with producer and co-writer Jim-E Stack, who also produced Bon Iver’s latest album, Sable Fable. Other contributors on the album include Dan Nigro, a producer for Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo, and Buddy Ross, whose work includes tracks for Vampire Weekend, Haim, Frank Ocean, and many others.

Ella Yiorgos (Lorde) recently had an interview with Zane Lowe, which was broadcasted on Thursday prior to the release of her new album, covering a variety of topics. These ranged from discussing the creation of “Hammer,” sharing a sneak peek of the album with Jack Harlow, to reflecting on her rise to stardom as a teenager, and dealing with the challenges that come with it.

As a gamer, I’ve been trying to draw a clear line between my artistic self and my everyday self for quite some time now. In the studio or when I’m in America, I fully embrace being an artist. However, once I return home to New Zealand, that creative part of me seems to shut down – it feels like a switch that just can’t be turned off. But as you might guess, that’s not realistic at all.

Lorde’s upcoming album tour, titled “Ultrasound World Tour,” is set to ignite stages later this autumn. This tour is anticipated to be one of the most sizzling events of the year, as tickets for almost every date have already been snapped up. The journey commences at Austin’s Moody Center on September 17th.
