Lorne Michaels Donates Career Archive to University of Texas

Lorne Michaels has given his Saturday Night Live archive, along with additional works, to the Harry Ransom Center, which is part of the University of Texas.

This extensive archive, stretching over five decades, encompasses a variety of items: rehearsal notes for SNL, sketches, marked-up scripts, personal letters, and much more. The collection charts Lorne Michaels’s work, from his early writing on shows like Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show, all the way to Saturday Night Live, as well as on shows such as The Kids in the Hall and films like Wayne’s World, Mean Girls, and Coneheads.

Stephen Enniss, director of the Ransom Center, expressed his gratitude towards Lorne Michaels for keeping us entertained with late-night laughter for five decades. He believes that Michaels’ archive will continue to be a valuable resource for students and researchers studying the social, political, and cultural history of our era in the years ahead. The Ransom Center is honored to safeguard this significant legacy.

From September 20, 2025 to March 15, 2026, a unique showcase, titled “Live from New York! The Creation of Lorne Michaels, “, will grace our center, offering an exclusive peek into the production of SNL and its influential role in our society.

I had the pleasure of bringing Saturday Night Live to life back in 1975, and I’ve been steering its course ever since. Not only am I the mastermind behind Saturday Night Live, but I also produce the Late Night series and The Tonight Show, as well as many other projects that keep me on my creative toes!

The Lorne Michaels Collection, established since 1957, enriches the Ransom Center’s current resources in literature, cinema, television, and performing arts by adding to them.

The collection will be fully available for research in January 2026.
