Louis Theroux-Produced Series ‘Boybands Forever’ With Simon Cowell, Robbie Williams Set for BBC

As a child of the 90s and early 2000s, I’m absolutely ecstatic about the upcoming BBC Two series, “Boybands Forever.” Growing up, these boy bands were the soundtrack to my life, the posters on my walls, and the dream I aspired to. To finally get a glimpse behind the scenes of their meteoric rise and tumultuous journeys is like winning the lottery for any 90s kid.

BBC Two is set to broadcast a fresh show delving into the boy band craze from the 1990s and 2000s, complete with discussions involving Take That’s Robbie Williams, Westlife’s Brian McFadden, and music tycoon Simon Cowell.

The three-episode series titled “Boybands Forever” is set to premiere towards the end of 2024. This production is brought to you by Mindhouse Productions, known for shows like “Louis Theroux Interviews” and “Lockerbie“. The creators behind this project are the award-winning producer duo Louis Theroux and Nancy Strang. The show will delve into the world of pop culture from the ’90s and ’00s, focusing on the remarkable careers of some of the most iconic pop stars from the U.K. and Ireland during that period.

Each episode will delve into the authentic experience of youthful stardom coupled with fame, uncovering crucial backstage moments. The series titled Boybands Forever will feature insights from the artists themselves such as Williams, McFadden, along with members hailing from East 17, Blue, Five, 911, and Damage.

The series will gain insights from the heads of music labels, band managers, and people who played significant roles in each artist’s rise to stardom. This includes Simon Cowell (RCA Records), Nigel Martin-Smith (Take That), Louis Walsh (Westlife), Daniel Glatman (Blue), Chris Herbert (Five) and Steve Gilmour (911), as well as individuals who are close to the band members, industry experts, presenters, and media personnel.

“Louis Theroux, who’s in charge of this series, is absolutely ecstatic about it,” he said. “It’s a grand saga filled with celebrities and those who make them, covering three decades. It delves into some of the most influential figures in contemporary British pop music. We witness their triumphs and tribulations, hearing from crucial figures as we trace back to the glory days of boy bands. We learn about their formation, their encounter with sudden stardom, the advantages and pitfalls they faced, internal struggles within the groups, rivalries between groups, and tensions between band members and their managers.”

The British journalist/presenter went on to say: “This captivating tale revolves around achieving your dreams only to find they’re not as you imagined, focusing on a group of young men and their managers who were both incredibly successful and extremely vulnerable. They lived it up and crashed in some cases. You remember those boys who sang and danced in perfect sync – Take That, East 17, Westlife, Blue, Five, Damage, 911, and many more – well, they’ve grown older and wiser now, allowing them to look back and ponder their experiences. It took us over a year to create this series, and I can hardly wait for people to watch it.”

“Boybands Forever” is a show produced by Mindhouse, airing on BBC Pop Music TV and BBC Two. It was initiated by Jonathan Rothery, the head of Popular Music TV. The commissioning editor for BBC Popular Music TV is Rachel Davies, while Strang and Theroux from Mindhouse serve as executive producers.
