As a devoted fan of Emily in Paris, I can’t help but feel a pang of empathy for Lucas Bravo as he navigates the complexities of his character, Gabriel. Having watched him transform from a charming and vibrant chef to a seemingly aimless character, I find myself yearning for the return of the original Gabriel we all fell in love with.
Lucas Bravo openly discusses the evolution of his character, Gabriel, from the series “Emily in Paris.
Previously, the actor expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that he anticipated development for the character Gabriel in season five of the Netflix series, as “he took some actions that caused me to distance myself from him. In the first season, we were very similar, but now, I’m not so sure. I feel like he requires a cleanup.
In a chat with IndieWire about his upcoming movie Freedom directed by Mélanie Laurent, I expressed my feelings about the decisions the ‘sexy chef’ character has been taking, saying I’m not exactly proud of them.
Bravo expressed to the press, ‘I’ve never been this distant from him.’ As they kept him clueless about his environment, the dynamics, constantly portraying him as a victim, lost in translation and oblivious to everything happening around him, being manipulated by everyone, it became less enjoyable for me to film or watch a character I adore so much, who has given me so much, gradually transform into mush.
He expressed that he had made an effort to express his worries regarding the character and offer suggestions during filming, yet he acknowledged the limitations set by the script’s parameters. The Hollywood Reporter contacted Netflix for a response.
He mentioned that he’s strived for many months, even through different seasons, to add depth to the production, yet the constraints on set are quite rigid. Essentially, we can’t alter a single line or an expressed feeling. They have a clear vision, and our role is simply to adhere to it.
Bravo has revealed that Emily in Paris’ contract ends at the close of season four, as he shared with IndieWire. This revelation comes after his concerns about Gabriel’s storyline development made him contemplate whether he wishes to continue working on Emily in Paris for season five.
The actress from Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris expressed her desire to witness Gabriel returning to his lively, spirited, jovial self. She mentioned that after three seasons portraying a melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost character, it’s no longer enjoyable. Since it’s a comedy, everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves and being playful, while she feels like she’s gradually sinking into some unknown state.
Bravo suggested that Netflix and Darren Star might be reluctant to alter the show’s formula due to its popularity, making them quite protective about not making any changes. In other words, if they do make changes, they often revert back to the original version quickly, as there seems to be a low tolerance for risk. “They are hesitant,” he explained.
Regarding Gabriel’s journey and Emily in Paris, there are some worries, but overall, he acknowledges that his career success is due to the show, which remains significant to him.
He expressed his sentiment, saying, “I’m really fond of this series and its cast.” He added, “It feels like I’m not expressing enough gratitude, but when you adore something, you wish for it to thrive – you want the finest version of it. To be honest, there have been moments when I’ve felt a bit vexed about the path my character is taking. However, let’s wait and see what happens next. The series isn’t finished yet.
