His career spans over four decades, from his early collaborations with Martin Scorsese on iconic films like “Raging Bull” and “Taxi Driver,” to his groundbreaking directorial debut with “Blue Collar.”

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating worlds created by various directors and screenwriters, I am thrilled to learn that veteran filmmaker Paul Schrader will be honored at this year’s Luca Film Festival with a lifetime achievement award. With over four decades of experience in the industry, Schrader has not only left an indelible mark on cinema but also served as a source of inspiration for countless aspiring filmmakers like myself.

The Italian event, taking place from September 21st to 29th, will also showcase a retrospective of Schrader’s films. This includes “Blue Collar”, “Hardcore”, “The Comfort of Strangers”, “Affliction”, “Auto Focus”, “The Walker”, “The Canyons”, “The Card Counter”, “Master Gardener”, “Mishima”, and “First Reformed”.

On September 26th, Schrader is set to conduct a public workshop (or seminar) at Cinema Astra, which will be graced by film students from multiple Italian universities. The next day, he will be honored with the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Paul Schrader kicked off his filmmaking journey by writing screenplays for Martin Scorsese on iconic films like ‘Raging Bull’ and ‘Taxi Driver’. His first directorial effort was the 1978 crime drama ‘Blue Collar’, starring Richard Pryor and Harvey Keitel. Schrader enjoyed significant commercial success in the early 80s with movies such as ‘American Gigolo’ (1980) featuring Richard Gere, and ‘Cat People’ (1982) with Nastassja Kinski. A second wave of acclaim came later in his career with what is known as his “man in a room” trilogy, which includes ‘First Reformed’ (2017), starring Ethan Hawke and nominated for best original screenplay at the Oscars, followed by ‘The Card Counter’ (2021) featuring Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish, and ‘Master Gardener’ (2022) starring Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver.

The latest adaptation of a literary work titled “Oh Canada,” featuring Richard Gere and Uma Thurman, had its debut at Cannes.

Previous recipients of the Lucca Festival award are figures like David Lynch, William Friedkin, Susan Sarandon, Isabelle Huppert, and Terry Gilliam.
