Luck Brings Us Together in Ana Barriga's 'Letter to My Mermaid'

As a seasoned gamer and art enthusiast with a soft spot for whimsical narratives and fantastical characters, I found Ana Barriga’s solo exhibition at Richard Heller Gallery, titled “Carta a mi sirena (Letter to My Mermaid),” absolutely captivating. The exhibit, nestled in the artistic heart of Los Angeles, is a vibrant testament to Barriga’s technical prowess and storytelling ability.

At Richard Heller Gallery, Ana Barriga unveils her enchanting style in her inaugural solo show in Los Angeles. Through a captivating blend of skillful technique and storytelling, the exhibit titled “Carta a mi sirena (Letter to My Mermaid)” fosters an environment for playfulness and wit, inviting one’s imagination to blossom in unforeseen directions.

The exhibition focuses on the enigmatic influence of luck, represented by an appealing charm – a delicate strawberry-shaped amulet. From a vegan vampire merman to a double-faced actress, each piece showcases unique characters from her imaginative universe, unveiling their relatable traits as they do so. In “Carlita,” a character shares that her ambition of becoming a DJ and music producer keeps her awake at night. Simultaneously, “The Owner” portrays a mermaid guardian of the strawberry heart. She confesses, “When people discovered that a strawberry heart was pulsing within me, they came to hunt me,” though the pain and injuries fueled her resolve to stop smoking.

Using oil, enamel, markers, and spray paint, Barriga constructs a unique universe brimming with character and cleverness. Her artwork mirrors the comedy and strife of her conflicting characters, offering a raw snapshot of humanity – the things we offer and accept from each other in pursuit of our desired destiny.

Carta a mi sirena (Letter to My Mermaid) is now on view through December 14, 2024.
