As a seasoned gamer of the fashion world, having navigated through countless runways and collections, I must say that Ludovic de Saint Sernin‘s selection as Jean Paul Gaultier’s next guest designer is nothing short of a masterstroke. The Paris-based prodigy, with his penchant for sensuality and daring design, seems to have been handpicked from the pages of Gaultier’s very own playbook.
Ludovic de Saint Sernin has been officially announced as the upcoming guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier. Based in Paris, he will be the next designer to craft a unique haute couture collection for the brand owned by Puig, which will be showcased during Paris Fashion Week in January of the coming year.
The news follows reports from WWD that de Saint Sernin, famous for his sensual designs and daring cuts, was approached to create a collection for Gaultier. Now that the partnership has been confirmed, de Saint Sernin will be the eighth guest designer for Gaultier, joining the ranks of Nicolas Di Felice, Simone Rocha, Julien Dossena from Rabanne, Haider Ackermann, Olivier Rousteing from Balmain, Glenn Martens of Diesel, and Chitose Abe of sacai.
Significantly, Gaultier has welcomed a well-known designer into his workshop every season since retiring from the runway in 2020. The aim is to reinvent his extensive archive, amassed over a half-century career, while incorporating elements of their unique design aesthetics into his world.
De Saint Sernin is a highly suitable contender for the position. Born in Brussels and raised in Paris, this designer, who earned his degree from École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré and has previously worked for Dior and Balmain, possesses a unique connection to gender fluidity and sexual expression similar to that of Gaultier. De Saint Sernin’s Fall 2024 collection showcases various skin-baring styles, chainmail accents, and BDSM-inspired leather harnesses adorned with Robert Mapplethorpe’s artwork.
The Jean Paul Gaultier collection by De Saint Sernin is set to make its grand entrance during the upcoming Paris Fashion Week, happening from January 27th through the 30th.
