As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless documentaries, I must say that the upcoming film about Luigi Mangione, directed by Alex Gibney, is bound to be an intriguing exploration of our contemporary societal malaise.
It wasn’t entirely unexpected, but what happened occurred much quicker than we thought. In fact, a documentary about Luigi Mangione, the individual who assassinated the UnitedHealthcare CEO, is already under production. Led by Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney, this film promises to delve into the intricacies surrounding the murder and the reasons why the 26-year-old has gained a sense of unity among American society as a folk hero.
In a collaboration between Anonymous Content and his personal production house, Jigsaw Productions, Gibney will assume the roles of both producer and director for an upcoming film. As reported by Variety, this documentary is set to delve into the intricate process of how killers are developed, the societal implications of such acts, and the priorities we uphold when deciding who gets to live and who does not.
Who are Luigi Mangione, Alex Gibney, and What Do We Know So Far About the Doc?
On December 4th, it’s claimed that Luigi Mangione fatally shot United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson during daylight hours, in his back, prior to a scheduled investor conference. This incident has underscored the troubling state of healthcare in America, highlighting issues such as annual loss of life due to claim denials or people accumulating crippling debt while seeking medical care. The event has sparked outrage among the disillusioned American public, who view it as a symbol of their frustration with the current system.
In simpler terms, many disillusioned and weary Americans have come to view Mangione as a symbol of resistance, following his actions against Thompson. This is because they see the system, which prioritizes shareholder profits over public welfare, as unhelpful and draining.
Despite not being a customer of United Healthcare, Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from Maryland, found himself in a troubling situation due to a severe back injury. This injury may have led him to contemplate the murder of the CEO, as United Healthcare is infamous for denying twice as many claims compared to the industry average. Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania days later and has since retained the services of prominent New York attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo. He had a manifesto on him when he was apprehended, which made references to documentarian Michael Moore and his 2007 documentary, “Sicko,” about the American healthcare system. Mangione has not yet been indicted.
Immediately after news about Mangione broke, people started brainstorming ideas for a film about him, with some even proposing Dave Franco as a potential cast choice due to their physical resemblance. While it seems likely that a narrative movie about the events will eventually be made given the circumstances surrounding his death, no plans are currently underway. As more developments unfold in the case, Hollywood may choose to wait for the resolution before drafting a screenplay, aiming to capitalize on the national fascination with this instance of vigilantism. It seems almost certain that producers are already considering limited series or films inspired by this momentous event.
Alex Gibney is primarily recognized for his hard-hitting social critiques through documentary filmmaking. At present, he’s working on a project about Elon Musk, while in the past, he’s trained his critical eye on other contentious personalities such as Elizabeth Holmes and her failed business Theranos (known as The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley)). He was awarded an Academy Award in 2008 for his documentary Taxi to the Dark Side, which delved into US torture techniques used during the Afghan war. However, it’s likely that he is best recognized for his documentaries on Enron (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) and Scientology (Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief)).
There is no release date for Alex Gibney’s Luigi Mangione documentary.
