Constructed during the 1960s, Luis Barragán’s La Cuadra San Cristobal is widely recognized in architectural circles for its unique pink stucco walls and long, sprawling planes. Although Mexican architect Barragán’s 6.7-acre property was purchased by philanthropic non-profit Fundación Fernando Romero in 2017, the specific plans for the site’s future have remained undisclosed until now.
In fall 2025, it has been declared that La Cudra San Cristobal will be reopened as a public cultural center and permanent exhibition space for Luis Barragán’s work, managed by the foundation. This historic restoration project will also include the presentation of newly designed pavilions by contemporary Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and an upcoming performance piece from renowned artist Marina Abramović, both scheduled to premiere prior to the fall opening.
Equipped with galleries, a podcast studio, a library, and areas for events, the foundation aims to not only safeguard Barragán’s architectural designs but also transform it into a hub that fosters creativity and sparks cultural advancements.
In addition, the residence of Luis Barragán – now a public museum – is the sole individual structure in Latin America that has been included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and it can be found in Mexico City. This architectural marvel is one of numerous design-focused attractions within the city’s capital, playing an essential role in the burgeoning trend of travel for design enthusiasts.
In stark contrast to the minimalist approach prevalent in Western European design, which leaned heavily on monochromatic white and gray exteriors, I found myself captivated by the vibrant use of color and organic material choices of Mexican architect, Barragán. Drawing inspiration from Mexico’s rich artistic heritage, his experimental architecture significantly contributed to the evolution of a uniquely Mexican form of Modernism in the 20th century and beyond.
