Macaulay Culkin Ruined ‘Home Alone’ for Brenda Song

It’s safe to say that watching Home Alone is not an annual holiday tradition at the Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song household. Culkin — who famously starred in the iconic film and its sequel as Kevin McAllister — and Song have been together since 2017 and are now engaged. And while promoting her latest project, the popular Netflix sports comedy Running Point on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the actress revealed that watching Home Alone with the film’s star ended up being a terrible idea.

When they began dating about eight years back, Song mentioned that she always watched the movie ‘Home Alone’ every Christmas. Culkin was reluctant at first, but Song insisted and eventually convinced him to watch it with her. However, their shared viewing experience became less enjoyable due to its meta aspect because of Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, being in the movie.

“He hadn’t seen the movie in like a decade, and I forced him — he didn’t wanna watch it. I was like, ‘We have to. We started watching it, and he started telling me all the behind-the-scenes stories. And I was like, ‘Stop! Stop! You’re ruining it for me! You’re ruining it!'”

“The movie holds such a special place in so many people’s hearts,” Song explained, before adding that, “It’s just, it’s hard for me now, that’s all.”

Song’s not alone in her love for the iconic ’90s holiday flick, for which a re-watch is customary in many households. Culkin starred in Home Alone (and its 1992 sequel) alongside Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, Catherine O’Hara, John Heard, and Devin Ratray. The holiday comedy became a cultural phenomenon when it landed in theaters in 1990, and continues to be a beloved classic. It was a huge success at the box office and launched Culkin’s career, who went on to be one of the most successful child actors of his generation. He later appeared in films like My Girl, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and The Good Son. Culkin’s recent projects include Entergalactic, American Horror Story, The Righteous Gemstones, and The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy (where he and his brothers Kieran, Rory, Shane, and Christian voice characters).

Song is also a famous child actor; she started her career on the Disney Channel, appearing in shows like The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (as the memorable London Tipton) and movies including Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior.

Culkin and Song met in 2014, and started dating in 2017 when they reconnected while co-starring in Seth Green’s Changeland. They share two kids and are engaged to be married. During her conversation with Hudson, Song also revealed some other surprising details about Culkin: like how he “had never really done laundry” and that the 44-year-old doesn’t know how to drive.

“I took him out to drive in our neighborhood — I was terrified, let me tell you. This 44-year-old man driving for the first time? I was like, ‘Nope! I gotta hire someone to do that.'”

Culkin is set to appear in the next season of Prime Video’s Fallout, while Song’s latest project, the sports comedy Running Point, is streaming on Netflix, where it tops the global charts. Home Alone and its sequel are streaming on Disney+.
