Madonna’s Biopic Could Become a TV Series

Madonna's Biopic Could Become a TV Series

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of immersing myself in the world of cinema, I have seen many biopics that range from captivating to downright disappointing. Madonna’s long-awaited biopic falls squarely into the former category, given her extraordinary life and career.

As a die-hard fan of music, I find it surprising that despite the monumental success and enduring influence of pop icon Madonna, her biopic hasn’t yet taken off. When I heard about Britney Spears’ upcoming biopic with an acclaimed director, it left me puzzled as to why the undisputed Queen of Pop doesn’t have one in production already. Contrary to appearances, it isn’t due to a lack of effort – Madonna herself has disclosed that the holdup is due to producers and agents who are pushing to “scale down” the ambition of the project.

Madonna recently shared with her 19.8 million Instagram followers that she’s hit a roadblock in the production of her biopic. After four years of development, an initial draft of the screenplay was penned by Academy Award-winner Diablo Cody, followed by revisions from Erin Cressida Wilson. However, Madonna has now paused the project, which had Universal Pictures set for release and Julia Garner slated to star. Although her upcoming world tour in 2023 was given as the reason for the delay, Madonna confessed that she’s grown tired of listening to producers and agents telling her why she couldn’t make her film. She emphasized that those in power wanted her to “scale back” or “think smaller” when depicting her life story, which chronicles her journey from humble beginnings in New York City to achieving musical stardom in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

It dawned on me that every aspect of my life will face obstacles, no smooth sailing ahead. So, I suppose I ought to be thankful…This situation pushes me to think creatively. My life has never been ordinary, and it seems I can’t follow a typical path.

Madonna, who’s well-known for her accomplishments, recognized the need for guidance when it came to crafting her biopic. In her own words, she sought advice from friends and creative professionals to reignite her inspiration and tell her story authentically. The advice they gave her was to embrace courage even more boldly. Moreover, she posed a question to her fans: Should the tale of her life be presented as a series or a feature film?

“Shrinking isn’t an option for us. If you truly desire something in life, the universe seems to find ways to assist you in achieving it. Ponder well before deciding whether to adapt my story into a serial or a movie – your answer matters!

Madonna Is Extremely Involved in Making Her Own Biopic

The biographical movie about Madonna has been under development for some time, and it’s no surprise that she’s taken a hands-on approach in shaping its details given her legendary status. After all, such a renowned performer would hardly take a backseat, right? Madonna played an active role in the casting decisions, and she was content with Garner’s selection, who was eager to start working on the film. In 2022, it was announced that Julia Fox might portray Madonna’s long-time friend, Debi Mazar; however, Fox recently shared that she is no longer part of the production.

It’s quite astonishing that it seems challenging to produce a biopic about Madonna given her extraordinary achievements in the music industry and her significant impact on pop culture. With over 335 million albums sold globally, she stands as the top-selling female recording artist of all time. Moreover, she has consistently reshaped the concept of live performances in the music business, becoming the first woman to amass $1 billion in concert earnings. Madonna’s influence extends beyond music, as she has also starred in successful films such as “Desperately Seeking Susan,” “Dick Tracy,” “A League of Their Own,” and “Evita,” for which she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy.
