Over time, numerous film adaptations of Mary Shelley’s novel “Frankenstein” have been produced, but Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming version seems poised to stand out among those released in recent years. Until now, little information about the movie beyond its star-studded cast has been disclosed; however, a fresh interview with the director has shed light on some intriguing details – and they might be unexpected.
In “The Bride,” director Gyllenhaal has assembled an impressive cast, led by Christian Bale as the legendary monster and Jessie Buckley in the title role. Supporting them are Penelope Cruze, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, and Magaro. The movie synopsis describes it as follows: “Frankenstein, a lonely man, travels to 1930s Chicago to find help from Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. They revive a murdered young woman, resulting in the creation of the Bride. However, she exceeds their expectations, sparking a passionate romance, police attention, and a radical social movement.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Magaro credited co-star Sarsgaard for helping him secure his part in the film, and further elaborated on its unique blend of diverse genres.
Peter generously introduced me to his wife [Gyllenhaal] for the film ‘The Bride’, which was fantastic as I got to work on it during the spring. This movie is quite eccentric, distinct from ‘The Lost Daughter’. It’s a unique blend of styles, incorporating elements from classic musicals like those of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, films like ‘Young Frankenstein’, both ‘Frankenstein’ versions, ‘Bonnie and Clyde’, and ‘Badlands’. Essentially, it’s a wild, enjoyable adventure that offers something fresh and unique. I can’t wait to share it with an audience. It’s absolutely bonkers!
Frankenstein Continues to be a Popular Subject for Movies
In the year 1818, when Mary Shelley penned “Frankenstein”, there were no televisions or movie theaters to be found. Instead, her tale was simply a story written on paper. Yet, as films began to emerge, it wasn’t long before the “Modern Prometheus” graced our screens for the first time in a 1910 silent film. However, it was James Whale’s adaptation of the novel in 1931 that has endured and continues to be imitated and referenced nearly a century later.
This doesn’t imply that there haven’t been numerous other interpretations of the story. In fact, various recent and future films have built upon this foundation, offering a blend of offbeat humor and intense horror. Last year saw Diablo Cody breathing life into the comedic horror film Lisa Frankenstein, with Kathyn Newton embodying the lead character in a humorous yet gory exploration of love and mortality. Toward the end of 2024, James Gunn’s DCU series Creature Commandos will feature David Harbour as the voice of the DC Comics interpretation of Mary Shelley’s monster.
In the year 2025, two additional films are set to debut, featuring the creature on screen. Besides The Bride!, Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited adaptation of the tale will come to fruition, with Oscar Isaac portraying Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi playing the monster in Moon Knight. However, a specific release date for this movie has yet to be announced.
The Bride! will be released in September.
