Mahershala Ali’s First Film ‘Taste the Revolution’ Finally Gets Trailer, 25 Years Later (Exclusive)

As a gamer who’s been through countless cinematic adventures, I can say that the anticipation for Mahershala Ali’s long-awaited debut film, “Taste the Revolution,” is as thrilling as leveling up in a much-loved RPG. The fact that this movie was filmed back in 2001 and has finally made its way to the public after being shelved for nearly two decades adds an intriguing layer of nostalgia and suspense to the whole story.

The long-awaited debut film where Mahershala Ali takes the lead is now set for release, following a quarter-century of delays.

In the mockumentary movie titled “Taste the Revolution“, written and directed by Dan Klein, Ali takes on the role of a groundbreaking leader. The film’s rights are currently up for grabs, and Colin Trevorrow is on board as executive producer, also appearing in a minor part within the project. This intriguing production is scheduled to debut at the New Orleans Film Festival on October 19th.

The film “Taste the Revolution” began production in 2001, but was put on hold after the 9/11 attacks. The footage has now been rediscovered and edited together to create the movie as originally intended. The plot revolves around two filmmakers documenting Mac Laslow (portrayed by Ali), a charismatic revolutionary leading a World Summit. This gathering attracts a diverse group of young adults, eager to make a difference in the world while letting off some steam.

In the trailer, Ali states, “Every significant cause has its head, and that’s been true for Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and even Moses.” Later on, his character expresses fervently, “I pour every ounce of myself into this uprising.

In his first attempt at feature directing, Klein presents Taste the Revolution, a film he initially scripted alongside Trevorrow and Brandon Krueger back in 1999. The production is under the leadership of Maury Loeb, David Linke, and Kevin Linke, with Ali, Klein, Trevorrow, and Phil Cohen serving as executive producers. Completing the cast are Alexander Bilu, Jeremy Dubin, Jen Nails, and Jeremy Beiler.

Following the end of production, events like 9/11 significantly reshaped the world, making our movie seem outdated. Consequently, we decided not to release it. Fast-forward to now, our main actor, Mahershala Ali, won his first Oscar for Moonlight and then another for Green Book. I showed him a clip from the old film, and he urgently requested us to complete it.

In 1999, Klein first encountered Ali, who was on the verge of finishing his graduate acting program at NYU. At first, Klein only thought of Ali for a minor part. However, Ali expressed interest in trying out for the main role and impressed during the audition, landing it instead.

Upon re-watching the video,” Klein notes, “it seemed strikingly applicable, as we find ourselves reflecting on events like Occupy Wall Street and Fyre Festival from the past two decades. The movie may continue to resonate sadly, as it seems many young individuals experience this period in their lives where they have limited resources but an abundance of time, energy, and fervor, though perhaps lacking the wisdom or understanding to grasp the complexities of the movements they support.

Since wrapping up the filming of “Taste the Revolution”, Ali has graced our screens in movies like “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” from 2008, “Predators” in 2010, and both parts of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” in 2014 and 2015.

In the past, Ali has been featured in productions such as “Leave the World Behind”, a voice part in the “Spider-Verse” series, and acting alongside Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming film “Jurassic World Rebirth”. Additionally, there’s buzz about Ali’s involvement in the long-awaited “Blade” movie, which fans are eagerly anticipating won’t take another 20 years to appear on screens.
