Mahesh Bhatt reveals Parveen Babi's ‘mental health episode’ forced him to re-shoot entire film with Rekha: ‘I was in a relationship…’

As a lifestyle expert with a keen interest in the lives of iconic figures, I find myself deeply moved by the poignant tale of Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi’s tumultuous relationship. The image of these two stars, captured in time, serves as a stark reminder of a love story that was cut short by the cruel hands of mental illness.

Mahesh Bhatt reflected on his three-year turbulent romance with Parveen Babi from the 70s. Sadly, she is no longer alive, and tales about what might have caused her untimely demise still linger in mystery. However, Bhatt has shared insights into Babi’s mental health struggles, revealing that they necessitated a complete reshoot of one film using another actress instead.

In an exclusive chat with Radio Nasha, I shared some personal insights about a challenging time in my life. During that period, I found myself deeply captivated by Parveen’s charm, and I envisioned creating a film titled “Ab Meri Baari.” This cinematic journey was intended to feature her as the leading lady, with legendary stars like Dev Anand, Rishi Kapoor, and Tina Ambani joining her on screen.

Mahesh expressed that he was in a relationship with her, and when you’re with someone, you naturally want to spend time with them. While filming, she experienced a mental health crisis, fell ill, and production halted. We subsequently took Rekha and re-shot the scene, but due to financial constraints, it wasn’t possible to complete the project fully.

It appears that Bhatt’s affection for Babi developed following her breakup with Kabir Bedi in 1977. However, unbeknownst to him, his affection for the actress would not have a long-lasting future. Babi was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, causing severe delusions and paranoia that eventually drove her away from Mahesh Bhatt and secluded her from the world.

Although she attained celebrity status on par with a superstar, Babi chose solitude during the final years of her life as her mental health struggles escalated. Sadly, Parveen left us in 2005 at just 50 years old. Her admirers continue to remember her fondly despite a life full of extraordinary experiences, and it is hoped that no one will ever have to endure such a poignant departure.
