Maika Monroe to Star in Period Horror Thriller ‘Victorian Psycho’

Don’t call her Mary Poppins.

As I, an avid gamer, excitedly share the news, Maika Monroe is set to take on the chilling role of a murderous governess in “Victorian Psycho“, a heart-pounding psychological horror thriller directed by Zachary Wigon. This spine-tingling production will be brought to life by Anton, the production and financing powerhouse behind it.

Monroe will now be working alongside Thomasin McKenzie, who appeared in ‘Last Night in Soho’ and ‘Jojo Rabbit’, as she takes over the character of the governess that was originally played by Margaret Qualley.

The project draws inspiration from Virginia Feito’s popular novel, with the author herself penning the script. In 1858, the narrative unfolds around Winifred Notty, a governess who secretly harbors psychopathic traits. She takes up work at an isolated gothic mansion. As she tends to her wards, mysterious disappearances of staff members occur, causing the estate owners to ponder, albeit too late, if their new governess might be slipping a lethal dose of arsenic into her daily doses of sugar.

Dan Kagan is set to create this project for the third time, following their collaborations on ‘Longlegs’ after Neon and ‘Azrael’ from IFC. Sébastien Raybaud, known for films such as ‘Greenland: Migration’, ‘Greenland’, and ‘The Night House’, along with Anton and Wigon, is also involved in the production, joining forces with Anonymous Content on this venture.

Nick Shumaker, Bard Dorros and Virginia Feito will executive produce.

In a statement, Wigon expressed that Maika’s captivating on-screen persona has deeply impacted him multiple times during her career filled with intricate performances. He is incredibly excited for her to apply her distinctive approach to psychological character studies to the enigmatic and peculiar character of Winifred Notty.

Anton is singlehandedly funding the movie production and handling international distribution deals. The domestic rights are jointly represented by Anton, the United Talent Agency’s Independent Film Group, and CAA Media Finance. Filming is scheduled to start in August of the current year.

Monroe has risen to become one of the key figures in modern horror cinema, amassing a portfolio of critically acclaimed and chilling films. Most recently, she appeared alongside Nicolas Cage in last year’s blockbuster horror film, Longlegs, which was one of the most profitable horror releases of the past decade. In the fall, Monroe took on the lead role as the sinister nanny in 20th Century Studios’ reimagining of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Before starting production on Victorian Psycho, she will film Reminders of Him, a Universal adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, which tells a story about motherhood and redemption.

Monroe is repped by Entertainment 360, WME, and FelkerToczek.
