Maika Monroe’s ‘Watcher’ Soars to the Top of Netflix Charts!

2022 thriller “Watcher,” starring Maika Monroe as Julia, is rapidly gaining popularity on Netflix. In this movie, Julia adapts to life in an unfamiliar country. Directed by Chloe Okuno, who also worked on the TV series adaptation of “Let the Right One In,” and written by Okuno and Zack Ford, it’s currently ranked third on the US Netflix chart.

The movie chronicles the story of Julia and her spouse Francis (Karl Glusman), who relocate to Bucharest, Romania due to a job opportunity for Francis. Frequently finding herself alone since Francis is always engrossed in work, Julia starts suspecting that a man residing in the neighboring building, portrayed by Burn Gorman (The Dark Knight Rises), may be spying on or stalking her.

Julia’s apprehensions and unease are skillfully portrayed in the movie “Watcher“, as the city grapples with a series of gruesome and unresolved murders of four women. Could Gorman, the Watcher, be the culprit behind these killings, and could Julia become his next target? Okuno constructed an old-fashioned, eerie horror film, at least for the first two acts of “Watcher“. In MovieWeb’s assessment, Julian Roman penned that the movie maintains its audience’s attention for most of the runtime, until it disappointingly collapses in a “frustrating climax, [that] becomes predictable following a compelling opening act.

2022’s “Watcher” made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival to an outpouring of praise and was recognized with a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize. The movie officially hit theaters on June 3, 2022, generating a decent $3.2 million globally, despite a production budget of $5 million. Critics have given it a highly favorable 88% rating, whereas audiences rated it at 67%.

Maika Monroe Starring in Two New Horror Films

After the massive success of “Longlegs,” a film often ranked among the top 10 horror films of 2024, Monroe has been selected to star in two upcoming thrillers. One is a reimagining of the iconic 1992 movie, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” where she will take on the villainous role of Peyton, previously portrayed masterfully by Rebecca De Mornay. Simultaneously, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (from “Ahsoka”) has been chosen to play Claire, the mother’s character, which Annabella Sciorra originally played in the original film. Michelle Garza Cervera (“Huesera: The Bone Woman”) is at the helm for this new production.

Another fascinating development is Monroe’s upcoming movie titled “Brides” which sees her reunite with director Okuno from “Watcher“. This film appears to offer a fresh perspective on Bram Stoker’s classic novel “Dracula“, as producer Anthony Bergman hints that it will revolutionize the horror genre with a “dynamic and unnerving” script. Production for this movie is set to begin shortly.

The official plot synopsis reads:

In the 1960s, Sally Bishop (Monroe) and her husband find themselves at a secluded Italian villa following Sally’s mental breakdown. The enigmatic count who owns the villa seems intrigued by Sally. However, things take an unexpected turn when the count encounters more than he bargained for with Sally’s feminist spirit disrupting his orderly, violent paradise of vampire brides.

neither “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” nor “Brides” has been scheduled for release yet; however, “Watcher” is now available to stream on Netflix.
