Mandalorian Star Hints at the Star Wars Franchise's Future Beyond Upcoming Movie

As a seasoned Star Wars fan who has witnessed the highs and lows of this iconic franchise over the past four decades, I must say that the latest news about The Mandalorian has me more excited than a Wookiee at feeding time!

Instead of releasing Season 4 immediately, The Mandalorian is choosing to make a movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu. Interestingly, there’s speculation that the story initially introduced on television might expand into a trilogy of films due to a suggestion from actor Giancarlo Esposito. Esposito portrayed Moff Gideon, the main antagonist in the first three seasons of The Mandalorian. Although Moff Gideon’s character was supposedly defeated at the end of Season 3, Esposito has been dropping hints about a “new direction” for the series.

In conversation at Dragon Con via Comic Book Resources, Esposito hinted at plans to merge various “Star Wars” streaming series, suggesting that the vision of Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau encompasses more than just “The Mandalorian” and Grogu. Although Esposito doesn’t hint at his own return, he seems to have an idea about where this is heading. This could imply that viewers might not have seen the last of Moff Gideon, possibly suggesting that either he or one of his clones survived. While fans are aware that Dave Filoni is working on a film that combines “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Ahsoka,” and “Skeleton Crew” to be released after “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” the idea that the “Mandalorian” era could expand again is somewhat surprising. Esposito stated:

In the style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney plans to combine these characters into an outstanding film or TV series. From what I gather, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are working on a new vision for a “Mandalorian” movie, which could lead to all these stories intersecting at some point. It seems we may be looking forward to another series of films, possibly even a trilogy or more.

Following the underperformance of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” at the box office, Disney decided to capitalize on the launch of Disney+ by giving greater emphasis to TV series for the Star Wars franchise. The first two seasons of “The Mandalorian” were hugely successful, but opinions among critics regarding subsequent shows varied. For instance, “Andor” received widespread praise, whereas productions such as “The Book of Boba Fett”, “Ahsoka”, and “The Acolyte” garnered more mixed reviews.

Disney has been reducing its involvement in the Star Wars television series. For instance, the second season of Andor will be its last, The Acolyte did not get renewed for another season, and instead of Season 4, The Mandalorian is transitioning into a feature film. Essentially, Disney aims to return Star Wars to being primarily a big-screen franchise.

The upcoming film featuring “The Mandalorian” and Grogu, slated for release on May 22, 2026, is expected to be the initial installment in a planned trilogy by Dave Filoni. This could potentially be the second or third movie in this series. Thus, we can anticipate another “Star Wars” film joining the lineup soon. This potential trilogy may draw inspiration from the Thrawn trilogy penned by Timothy Zahn in the 1990s, a significant piece of the original “Star Wars” Extended Universe before Disney took over and rebranded it as “Legends.” Notably, elements from this novel have been incorporated into “Star Wars: Rebels” and “Ahsoka,” suggesting that Disney and Lucasfilm are now considering a trilogy bridging the gap between the original and sequel “Star Wars” trilogies.
