Filmmaker Mansoor Khan, known for his memorable projects with cousin Aamir Khan such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, shared an intriguing revelation. He confessed that if the initial script of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar had been produced, he believes it might have negatively impacted Aamir’s acting career.
During an interview on India Now and How YouTube channel, Mansoor Khan revealed that the concept for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar was born before his father, Nasir Husain, thought up Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak – a film aimed at launching Aamir Khan’s career. Starting in 1986, when Aamir was around 19 or 20 years old, Mansoor started working on the sports drama. Simultaneously, Nasir Husain was busy crafting Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak to introduce Aamir to the film industry.
Looking back at the chronology of events, I must confess that if I had chosen to go ahead with the original version of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, it might have put a strain on Aamir Khan’s budding career. Luckily for both of us, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak came before, setting the stage for our future triumphs. “I am grateful I didn’t make that movie; it would have derailed Aamir’s journey in cinema,” is what I find myself saying today.
Initially dissatisfied with the script for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, the filmmaker opted instead to work on Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, a suggestion made by his father, Nasir Husain. At first, he was reluctant, viewing it as merely another love story, but ultimately decided to direct the film.
Although the movie achieved great success, its director openly confessed that he wasn’t completely content with the finished work, going as far as expressing his dissatisfaction during the initial viewing.
Additionally, Mansoor mentioned experiencing disappointment following the first screening of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, and even suggested re-filming certain scenes that he believed weren’t satisfactory. Despite Mansoor’s criticisms of specific aspects within the movie, his father maintained a positive outlook on the final product, disregarding his concerns.
Regarding the film’s eventual triumph, he confessed that to this day, he still regrets handling certain scenes differently in retrospect. He put it as, “I wish I had approached those scenes differently, just a little bit.
Speaking about his experience, Mansoor Khan mentioned that creating Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak opened his eyes to shortcomings in his initial plans for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. As a result, he completely revised the movie. He acknowledged that his father, Nasir Husain, had an intuitive grasp of audience tastes, a quality Mansoor felt he was lacking at first.
Instead of regularly attending popular movie theaters such as Gaiety Galaxy, he admitted that he wasn’t in sync with mainstream cinema. But when he witnessed the public enjoying scenes that he had initially overlooked, it sparked a fresh viewpoint within him. This newfound perspective encouraged him to rework his film with a more authentic and engaging perspective.
