Marathon Will Not Be a Free-To-Play Game; Expect To Pay “Full Price”

Based on reports from GameSpot, it appears that Marathon won’t offer a free-to-play model. Instead, gamers are expected to purchase this new Bungie shooter at its full retail price.

As a gamer, I’m pumped about Marathon’s grand reveal, where Bungie unveiled some gameplay sneak peeks! The buzz was electric with news of an upcoming Closed Alpha and the game’s planned release later this year, coinciding with Borderlands 4. However, in a surprising twist, the developers chose to keep us guessing about the game’s pricing details – no tag revealed yet!

Will Marathon Be Free-To-Play?

It’s been noted that GameSpot has had a preview of this game. During their playthrough, they mentioned that Marathon is designed to offer a high-quality, paid experience, so it won’t be available for free.

Initially, the cost of the game remained undisclosed, leading many to speculate that a “full price” would mean Marathon would cost around $70. However, Bungie clarified through social media that the game will not be sold at full price, but it will still carry a price tag.

Games that focus on player versus player (PvP) or player versus environment (PvE) battles, which are typically sold for a cost, have managed to thrive, despite the assumption being that offering the game for free would increase chances of success. Helldivers 2, priced at $40 and featuring free battle passes, might be the epitome of this trend.

As a gamer myself, I must admit that the flop of Concord casts a long shadow over Marathon. Sure, a collaboration like this from Bungie probably won’t crash and burn to the same extent, but launching with a hefty price tag in today’s gaming world – where you can jump into games such as Marvel Rivals, Fortnite, or Valorant without initially spending a dime – is a challenging proposition for plenty of gamers these days.

Regardless, you can expect the cost of Marathon to be announced this summer. The game is set to launch for PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5 on September 23rd. It’s worth noting that you won’t need a PlayStation Network account to play the game on any platform other than the PlayStation 5.
