As a gamer with a keen interest in music and social justice, I find myself deeply moved by Maren Morris’ courageous stand against racism in the industry. Having grown up in a world where games often mirror real-life scenarios, I can relate to her experiences as a young mother receiving death threats for speaking out. It’s a chilling reminder of how far we still have to go in our quest for equality and understanding.
Maren Morris discloses that her son Hayes faced threatening messages following her public criticism of Morgan Wallen over his use of a racial slur last year (2021).
During her recent appearance on Sophia Bush’s podcast, Work in Progress, Morris expressed that, as a young mother, the circumstances were indeed frightening.
The Grammy-winning artist went on to say, “It wasn’t just death threats against me, but also towards my son. So it felt like, ‘Wow, now they’re involving the children.’ I remember it was extremely dangerous and terrifying to receive threats directed at my young child.”
Morris expressed that she has no regrets about her choice to challenge Wallen, and she won’t offer an apology for standing up against racism within the music industry. “I feel as strongly about it now as I did then,” she stated. “Perhaps I wouldn’t use Twitter again, but there might be more refined ways to express my viewpoint. However, things are what they are.”
She added, “Avoid racism, transphobia, and homophobia. My stance remains firm on this matter, so if you’re hoping I might change my feelings, I won’t. Quite the contrary, it’s the revelation that in this music community of Nashville – where I reside – there seems to be a lack of allies for people of color, which is truly disheartening.”
In February 2021, TMZ posted a video showing singer Morgan Wallen coming home inebriated with friends following a night out, and using a racial slur. After the video spread widely online, fellow country artist RaeLynn commented on Twitter about the incident, suggesting that if a female country musician had acted similarly, they would likely face consequences such as being dropped by their label, losing endorsements, and becoming shunned in the music industry.
She noted, “This incident truly reflects our town [Nashville], as it’s not the first ‘altercation’ for him, and he recently shattered a significant streaming record last month. We are well aware that this isn’t his first instance of using that word. At all costs, we shield and maintain their wealth without any consequences.”
About a week following the emergence of the video, Wallen put out an apology video, urging those who had supported him to refrain from doing so further.
