As a gamer with a soft spot for cinematic masterpieces and a penchant for behind-the-scenes tales, I found myself captivated by Margot Robbie‘s recent conversation on Talking Pictures. It was fascinating to delve into the making of The Wolf of Wall Street, a film that marked her breakthrough in Hollywood.
Margot Robbie is looking back at her full-frontal nude scene in The Wolf of Wall Street.
On a recent chat with Ben Mankiewicz on the Talking Pictures podcast from Turner Classic Movies, I looked back at my journey that led me to star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film. My role as Naomi Lapaglia, Jordan Belfort’s wife, was a career-defining moment for me when I was just starting out in my twenties.
In the film, I was captivated by Robbie’s courageous moment – a full-frontal scene that she herself advocated for, despite Scorsese presenting another option to her.
She remembered Scorsese proposing she might hide behind a dressing gown, commenting, “Perhaps you could wear a robe if you’re uneasy.” Nevertheless, Robbie felt it wouldn’t align with the character’s authenticity.
However, it’s not consistent with her character in that particular situation. Instead, she’s about to reveal herself entirely – that’s the strategy she’s employing at present,” is how Robbie put it.
During her movie audition, Robbie took control of the situation herself. In one particular scene, Robbie mentioned that it concluded with DiCaprio’s character asking her to give him a kiss, but the actress had alternative plans instead.
In a playful manner, Robbie expressed, “I had an impulse that if I were to kiss Leonardo DiCaprio now, it would be fantastic! I can hardly wait to share this with my friends. But then I changed my mind and instead gave him a slap.” He continued, “There was a moment of absolute quietness, which seemed like forever but was likely just three seconds.
Scorsese and DiCaprio approved of the choice, bursting into laughter.
I couldn’t help but join in their laughter. It was Leo and Marty, they were rolling with laughter. They exclaimed, ‘That was a riot!’ Looking back on it, I found myself chuckling too, even though I was thinking to myself, ‘You’re going to end up behind bars, that’s either assault or battery. Your career is over, you fool. And what was the need to hit him so forcefully? You could have been a bit gentler.’
Although her breakout role in the movie made a significant impact, Robbie admitted that she felt more like a minor player amidst the grand spectacle, as if she were “simply one piece in this vast production.
Referencing the movie “Titanic” as the one that consistently brings her to tears, and admitting she plays its theme tune when she needs to shed tears in a particular situation, Robbie described it as almost a real-life reenactment of art imitating life, as she reminisced about using the music to prepare for an emotionally charged scene with DiCaprio during filming.
After I requested a divorce and all that followed, there was quite an extraordinary event. On that same day, Kate Winslet paid a visit to the film set, to see Leo. I happened to be in an adjacent room, attempting to maintain a somber mood by playing the Titanic soundtrack. Suddenly, I witnessed Kate Winslet and Leo walking by, which felt incredibly dreamlike.
The Wolf of Wall Street went on to receive five Academy Award nominations.
In another part of the podcast, Robbie also reminisced about her role in Damien Chazelle’s movie, Babylon. However, she’s still perplexed as to why the audience didn’t take a liking to it.
