As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive experiences and a soft spot for art installations that blur the lines between reality and fantasy, I must say, I am utterly thrilled about the upcoming exhibition at MAM Shanghai – Marina Abramović: Transforming Energy!
The Shanghai branch of the Modern Art Museum (MAM) has unveiled plans for an exhibition titled “Marina Abramović: Transforming Energy“, which will be Marina Abramović’s initial museum showcase in China as a renowned global artist. This event is slated to take place from October 10, 2024, through February 28, 2025, and draws inspiration from Abramović’s historic 1988 performance where she walked the Great Wall of China alongside German artist Ulay, making them pioneers as international artists to traverse this monumental structure.
Organized by Shai Baitel, Artistic Director at MAM Shanghai, in conjunction with Abramović, this exhibit showcases more than 1,000 images from her walk along the Great Wall and a collection of fresh art pieces. Stretching across three levels, the exhibition encourages active audience involvement by incorporating interactive artworks and objects imbued with crystals, thought to provide transformative power.
The exhibition features an array of artworks spanning Abramović’s long career, encompassing fresh pieces as well as her renowned Transitory Objects. This display offers viewers a valuable opportunity to delve deeply into Abramović’s artistic journey and recent innovations.
