Actress Mariska Hargitay, known for her role in Law & Order: SVU, is stepping into the director’s chair for the first time with a deeply personal project – a film centered around her mother, Jayne Mansfield.
HBO is set to debut Mariska Hargitay’s documentary titled “My Mom Jayne” in June. This movie chronicles her journey as she endeavors to comprehend, appreciate, and connect with her mother on a personal level for the first time. As per the synopsis of the film, it delves deep through heartfelt conversations and a treasure trove of unseen photos and home videos, helping Mariska explore her mother’s public persona as well as the private aspects that shaped her, ultimately uncovering the complexities and richness of who Jayne truly was to both the public and those closest to her.
Hargitay is the child of Jayne Mansfield, a famous actress and sex symbol from the ’50s and ’60s, and Mickey Hargitay, an actor and bodybuilder. Tragically, Mansfield passed away in a car accident in 1967 when Hargitay was just 3 years old; fortunately, Hargitay survived the accident, along with two of their older siblings.
In a statement, Hargitay expressed that the creation of this movie was deeply personal and emotional. It’s a journey to discover the mother I never met, embracing a piece of myself that I hadn’t acknowledged before, and retelling my mother’s narrative as well as my own truth,” she said. “I’ve always felt power comes from being open about our feelings, and working on this film has shown me the strength of that belief more than ever.
Mariska Hargitay is taking the reins as both producer and director for the first time in a full-length production with “My Mom Jayne”. Although she has previously directed several episodes of “SVU”, this is her debut for a feature film. Trish Adlesic, who collaborated with Hargitay on the 2017 documentary “I Am Evidence” produced by HBO, is also involved in this project as a producer. Lauran Bromley serves as executive producer.
