As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating through virtual worlds and appreciating digital art, I must say that Mark A. Rodriguez‘s latest exhibition at Chris Sharp Gallery in LA is nothing short of captivating. The theme of the US Forever Stamp resonates deeply with me, given my lifelong obsession with collecting virtual stamps in online games!
Mark A. Rodriguez’s latest solo exhibition titled “Forever” is currently being displayed at Chris Sharp Gallery in Los Angeles. Inspired by the perpetual US Forever Stamp, this show brings together an assortment of work that infuses everyday Americana with a subdued yet profound existentialism, reflecting on its themes for an extended period.
In approximately 20 creations, Rodriguez crafts distinctive stamp containers that merge elements of painting and sculpture. These artworks seem to envelop the stamps within a mass of sculptamold and acrylic, obscuring their tiny size. By doing so, each frame magnifies the intricate details of the stamps.
According to the gallery, the objects themselves possess an unusual yet captivating beauty that echoes various chapters of Los Angeles sculpture, ranging from Mike Kelley to Ken Price. In the artwork named Forever, the vivid colors delightfully embrace a harmonious discord.
The performance delves deeper into the artist’s past creations, which explore everyday items commonly found in homes. It investigates concepts like worth, accumulation, and readymade objects, with the artist feeling both unease and familiarity concerning topics that extend beyond a single lifespan.
Forever is now on view at Chris Sharp Gallery until September 7, 2024.
