As a die-hard Star Wars fan who has grown up watching these iconic movies, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of melancholy as we bid farewell to yet another pillar of the Star Wars universe. Robert Watts was not just a production manager or producer; he was an integral part of the team that brought our favorite galaxy far, far away to life. His contributions to films like Inspector Cluseau, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the original Star Wars trilogy are immeasurable, and his influence on cinema as a whole is undeniable.
Over the past few years, it’s been incredibly sad to see some of the Star Wars family bid us farewell. In 2019, we lost Peter Mayhew, the cherished actor behind Chewbacca, and just recently, James Earl Jones, the legendary voice of Darth Vader, departed at 93. Now, another crucial figure in George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away has joined them. I’m speaking about Robert Watts, a production manager and producer who played an essential role in the Star Wars franchise as well as other iconic films. Following his passing at 86, Luke Mark Hamill penned a heartfelt tribute to Watts.
A representative for Robert Watts confirmed to THR that he passed away in his sleep at his home in East Sussex, England on Monday, September 30. Fans took to social media around that time to pay tribute to the beloved filmmaker and his body of work. Days later, Mark Hamill took to Instagram to share some sweet photos of Watts, including one behind-the-scenes snapshot that appears to be from one of their ventures into the galaxy far, far away. As great as those pics were, it was Hamill’s sentimental message that was really touching:
On my first day at the studio for Star Wars, I encountered Robert Watts and we instantly formed an enduring friendship that lasted a lifetime. He was an extraordinarily talented filmmaker who had a distinguished career spanning many years. I held him dear in my heart, and his passing has left me heartbroken. I’ll always carry the memory of him with me, as he will be deeply missed. 💔
It is no exaggeration to say that the late film producer significantly contributed to some of the most groundbreaking films in cinema history. Prior to teaming up with George Lucas, Mr. Watts was a production manager for films such as Bud Yorkin’s comedy-mystery “Inspector Clouseau” and Stanley Kubrick’s classic science fiction film “2001: A Space Odyssey,” both released in 1968. Additionally, he worked as a location manager on the James Bond movie “You Only Live Twice,” directed by Lewis Gilbert in 1967.

George Lucas Turned 80, And Mark Hamill Posted A Touching Tribute To The Star Wars Creator
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share the fascinating journey of George Lucas’s right-hand man during the Star Wars era – none other than Gary Kurtz. It was his role as a production manager on the 1977 Star Wars that catapulted him into the limelight, proving to be a pillar of strength amidst the film’s tumultuous production process. The movie’s resounding success earned him the prestigious title of associate/co-producer for the sequels – The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. After wrapping up the original trilogy, Gary Kurtz continued to shine in producing roles for the first three Indiana Jones movies. Notably, he was also involved with the production of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and An American Tail: Fievel Goes West.
It’s not at all unexpected that Mark Hamill honored Robert Watts, given his consistent practice of acknowledging and appreciating others. In fact, this year alone, Hamill has paid tribute to Bob Newhart upon his passing and expressed heartfelt words for James Earl Jones. Furthermore, during interviews, Hamill frequently expresses admiration for his co-stars, such as praising Carrie Fisher’s portrayal of Princess Leia in the original Star Wars movie this past summer.
Although Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and their fellow actors played pivotal roles in the Star Wars films, it’s essential not to overlook the significant contributions made by the crew. After all, Robert Watts’ work is equally worthy of admiration by fans across generations, and I have no doubt that his efforts will continue to be appreciated for many years to come.
On that note, you can stream the original three Star Wars films now using a Disney+ subscription.
