Mark Hamill Praises Carrie Fisher's Original Star Wars Performance: ‘She Made Us Look Like The Two Stooges

As a fan who’s spent countless hours lost in the galaxy far, far away, I can confidently say that Carrie Fisher’s portrayal of Princess Leia Organa is nothing short of iconic. Her debut in “A New Hope” was a breath of fresh air, shattering the stereotype of damsel-in-distress with her fierce and formidable presence.

Whether you decide to watch A New Hope first or instead opt for going the Star Wars movies in order chronologically, i.e. kick things off with The Phantom Menace, you’ll ultimately get to enjoy Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess Leia Organa. It didn’t take long for the young royal from Alderaan to show how capable she is in the Original Trilogy’s first entry, as she gunned down a stormtrooper before being captured on the Tantive IV. And then, of course, who can forget when she took charge of her Death Star prison break? It was a move that costar Mark Hamill said made Luke Skywalker and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo look like “the Two Stooges.”

Hamill reminisced about filming this particular scene in the original “Star Wars” movie during a talk at FAN Expo Philadelphia (as shared by TikTok user va.va.vera). He initially commented that Leia Organa’s portrayal as something more than a “timid wallflower” was an example of “unintentional feminism,” which was evident even in the early stages, such as her showing no fear whatsoever in the presence of Darth Vader. Luke Skywalker continued by stating that…

When we saved her, she put Luke and Han in a silly or foolish position. ‘This is supposed to be a rescue? Hand over that gun.’ She made us look like complete buffoons. I thought, “She’s displaying strength without apology – proving that women can be just as powerful on screen as any male character.”

Mark Hamill reminisces about the blunt advice Carrie Fisher shared with him when he sought to disassociate himself from the Star Wars universe.

Mark Hamill playfully teases the bond between Luke and Leia in Star Wars, honoring Carrie Fisher’s birthday.

In case you require a reminder, if rewatching Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope on Disney+ doesn’t appeal to you before continuing with this article, let me summarize an essential scene for you. When Luke and Han infiltrated the first Death Star, they donned stormtrooper uniforms and pretended to transport Chewbacca as a prisoner to the same detention level where Leia was being held captive. They managed to neutralize guards in the area and liberate Leia from her cell. However, reinforcements soon arrived, forcing them into a corner. Instead of waiting to be overrun, Leia grabbed Luke’s blaster, fired at a nearby grate, and led everyone into one of the space station’s trash compactors to escape.

As we navigated through the game, our team encountered some tough situations. A bizarre sea monster snatched Luke beneath the waves, almost crushing us all. But just as we were about to give up hope, Leia swooped in like a guardian angel, rescuing us from a dire predicament, barely minutes after her own escape from imprisonment. To add to that, she’d recently survived an intense interrogation by the IT-0 droid without revealing the Rebellion’s main base location. Given these circumstances, it’s no surprise that Mark Hamill compared our dynamic to two-thirds of The Three Stooges – one of the most iconic comedy acts in vaudeville and Hollywood’s Golden Age.

In both “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”, as well as the recent Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Leia consistently shone brightly.
