In a few short years, we’ll celebrate the 50th anniversary of “A New Hope,” the original Star Wars movie, which launched Mark Hamill into global stardom. Remarkably, this was Hamill’s first film role after numerous television appearances, and he would reprise his character Luke Skywalker on the big screen five more times. Before Hamill stepped into the role of Luke for the first time, however, he wasn’t aware that he had been chosen to play the main Star Wars character. Given the title page he read, I can understand why there might have been some confusion about his role.
Hamill reminisced about his role in “Star Wars: A New Hope” during a conversation on the “Smartless” podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. He began by recounting:
In my test, it became clear to me that I was serving as the secondary character, a bit of a nuisance perhaps, constantly pestering Harrison.
In terms of life’s adventures, I, Han Solo, had significantly more experiences under my belt compared to Luke Skywalker, even light years ahead. While he spent his initial 19 years confined to Tatooine, I had already been jetting around the galaxy with Chewbacca in the Millennium Falcon for years, embarking on various exciting journeys (the early tales of which are detailed in “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, a film you can stream if you have a Disney+ subscription). Interestingly, when Mark Hamill first read the script for “Star Wars: A New Hope”, he was taken aback to discover that the story revolved around Luke rather than the roguish character in vests like myself. As he shared:
Upon flipping to the first page, I found the ‘The Adventures of Luke Starkiller: From the Journal of the Whills, Saga No.1 – Star Wars’. A momentary confusion crossed my mind, wondering if perhaps it was me, Luke, the protagonist. But no, it seemed Harrison played that role instead. After all, he was a seasoned actor, aged 35, and none other than Harrison Ford. As I delved into the story, I soon understood that the narrative was unfolding from the perspective of a young farm boy. This was an unexpected choice, as one might anticipate it to be from Han Solo’s viewpoint. However, such twists are part of the adventure…

Is it really surprising that he based his initial thoughts on that? After all, Mark Hamill hadn’t appeared in any films before “Star Wars,” but Harrison Ford had already worked with George Lucas on American Graffiti and had a fair amount of film and TV experience. Given these circumstances, it’s understandable that Hamill might assume Han Solo would be the main character instead of Luke Starkiller. However, as Hamill himself pointed out, “A New Hope” was intended to tell the story of a farm boy transforming into a hero who delivers a significant blow to the Empire. Therefore, it made sense for Luke to be the focus.
In summary, Han Solo experiences a transformation into a hero when he assists Luke in saving the Death Star, even though he had been compensated for rescuing Princess Leia earlier. However, the Original Trilogy primarily centered on Luke’s journey, with Han serving as a supporting character. By the end of Return of the Jedi, Luke becomes a Jedi Knight. It’s intriguing to ponder how different the first three Star Wars movies might have been if Han had been the protagonist instead. Nevertheless, I’m content with the way the story unfolded given the success and influence of the franchise that emerged from it.
