Mark Harmon Gives NCIS: Origins' New Leroy Gibbs Star All The Compliments, And The Actor Is Feeling The Pressure

As a die-hard NCIS fan who has been following the franchise since its inception, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming prequel spinoff, NCIS: Origins. The prospect of seeing Mark Harmon reprising his iconic role as Leroy Gibbs, even if only for a brief moment, is enough to send shivers down my spine. But what has me truly excited is the addition of Austin Stowell as a younger version of Gibbs.

In spite of NCIS: Hawai’i being among the list of shows that were canceled in 2024, the story continues with a prequel spinoff titled NCIS: Origins. This new installment in the CBS crime drama series is set to introduce not one but two Leroy Gibbs characters into the Fall TV schedule. (Initially at least.) Fans are eagerly awaiting Mark Harmon’s return to the role he originally played, long after his departure, as well as Austin Stowell stepping into the shoes of a younger Special Agent in the series premiere.

Fans can take delight in knowing that Harmon played a part in selecting Stowell for the main role, as well as other characters who will appear throughout the show, some of whom are recognizable and others newcomers. In fact, the actor from “Summer School” had only positive things to say about Stowell before what could potentially be his most significant role yet. Harmon expressed his praise for Stowell in an interview with People.

As Austin entered the room, there was a slight tremor, prior to any words being spoken. . . . Upon exiting the audition, someone commented, “Well, I guess I should just come out and say it: he’s a screen legend.

Since his notable recurring role in “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” Austin Stewell, who is 39 years old, has consistently appeared in both films and television series. While he frequently plays supporting characters, he has demonstrated remarkable talent in various projects such as the creature comedy “Colossal” (2016), the psychological thriller “Swallow” (2019), and the romantic comedy “The Hating Game” (2021). It can be said with justification that he is indeed a movie star.

As a fan, I believe Mark Harmon wasn’t merely gesturing towards his IMDb page during that anecdote, but rather the undeniable charm and allure that top-tier Hollywood stars are famous for radiating. It’s intriguing to imagine those star qualities illuminating on a police procedural series like NCIS: Origins. (And let’s not forget, Kaitlin Olson is absolutely nailing it on ABC’s hit show High Potential, so it’s certainly within the realm of possibility!)

Indeed, it’s true that several actors auditioned for the part, including “Arrow” alum Stephen Amell, yet it was Stowell who ultimately clinched the role, as he put it himself.

In that setting, there was fierce rivalry among many talented individuals. However, Austin stood out remarkably as one of the very few who truly caught the spotlight.

It’s unclear if any of the actors trying out for roles were actually Michael Weatherly in disguise. However, it seems he has a spin-off series coming up titled “NCIS: Tony & Ziva“.

How Austin Stowell Feels About The Responsibility

Regardless of how much faith Mark Harmon and other creators of NCIS: Origins may hold, the task of developing Leroy Gibbs’ backstory within the new team that includes Austin Stowell as well as Kyle Schmidt’s Mike Franks, lies solely with Austin Stowell himself. This is a significant responsibility, one which he acknowledges and accepts wholeheartedly, even in the face of any concerns. In his own words:

I don’t merely attend work for my own sake; I consider it a shared experience with everyone. It feels like an extraordinary opportunity, and I absolutely cherish it… Knowing that over 300 million NCIS fans eagerly anticipate what lies ahead only fuels my determination and inspires me to meet their expectations.

It’s possible that such a large number (300 million) could be overestimating things slightly, but it’s not hard to imagine that a significant number of people have identified as fans of NCIS since it first aired in 2003. If that many viewers had tuned in for the premiere of Origins, CBS might have decided to halt all other programming and redirect all their resources towards Stowell.

On Mondays at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, you can catch the latest episodes of NCIS: Origins. This series is broadcast before new episodes of the main NCIS drama and after fresh episodes of The Neighborhood and Poppa’s House. You can stream all these shows the next day if you have a Paramount+ subscription.
