Mark Harmon Guest Starred In The NCIS: Origins Premiere, And I’m Loving The Fan Reactions About His Return As Gibbs

As a gamer with over two decades of NCIS-watching under my belt, I must say that the return of Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS: Origins was a heartwarming surprise. It’s like revisiting an old friend you thought had moved away for good. The brief appearance was just enough to remind us why we fell in love with the character in the first place, and it added a layer of depth to the prequel series that I hadn’t expected.

Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS: Origins two-part premiere “Enter Sandman” are ahead!

Initially when NCIS: Origins was unveiled in January, it was disclosed that Mark Harmon, known for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS over almost two decades, would provide the voiceover and serve as an executive producer for the series focusing on a younger iteration of his character, portrayed by Austin Stowell. However, in September it became clear that Harmon himself would make an appearance on screen during the two-part premiere of Origins, which aired on the 2024 TV schedule. Following the broadcast of “Enter Sandman,” I’ve been enjoying reading the enthusiastic responses from fans regarding the return of the older Gibbs.

In the beginning of “Enter Sandman,” brief scenes showed Mark Harmon’s character Leroy Jethro Gibbs writing in his journal near a campfire, accompanied by voiceovers that will be prominent throughout this prequel series. Despite having only a handful of minutes on screen, these scenes sparked enthusiasm among fans. HarveyStwoFace tweeted:

In the 4th episode of NCIS Season 19, Leroy Jethro Gibbs chose to remain in Alaska, finding a tranquility he hadn’t experienced since the tragic loss of his wife Shannon and daughter Kelly. Confirming to TVLine that Gibbs has been in Alaska for quite some time, tucked away in the heart of nowhere, showrunners Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North left us guessing about his activities during this period. Yet, simply watching Harmon portray the character was satisfying enough for many fans, as @lumanicious put it: “Just seeing Gibbs in Alaska was more than enough for me.

It appears that Mark Harmon may not return to NCIS: Origins onscreen for the rest of Season 1 (if it gets renewed). However, it’s worth noting that he was gracious enough to reprise his iconic character as a means to connect this spin-off with the original series. @sdav743 shared this insight after spotting Harmon in the show.

In the first episode of “Origins”, you might wonder why the older Leroy Jethro Gibbs was there. He’s actually penning down his experiences as an NIS agent, a name the law enforcement agency went by back then. However, this isn’t just a trip down memory lane. Gibbs admits that he’s narrating an account he’s not fond of recounting, one centering around his coworker Lala Dominguez, portrayed by Mariel Molino. The campfire scene served as a fitting conclusion to the episode, a point @bowlingchefs highlighted in their post.

It’s been established that Gibbs and Dominguez won’t have a romantic relationship on NCIS: Origins, but it seems she will play an essential role in our lead character’s life, though it’s not someone he readily discusses with others. As the season unfolds, this dynamic may become more apparent, but for now, it’s exciting to see Mark Harmon back in the NCIS universe. If there is a second season of Origins, perhaps Harmon could make a brief return to the screen.

On Mondays at 10 pm Eastern Time, you can catch NCIS: Origins on CBS, right after fresh episodes of NCIS Season 22 have aired. If you’re interested in the entire NCIS series, consider subscribing to Paramount+ for streaming access. Also, don’t forget that both NCIS: Sydney Season 2 and NCIS: Tony & Ziva are upcoming additions.
