1986 proved to be an eventful year for Mark Harmon. It all started on January 27, 1986, when he was bestowed with the title of People’s second Sexiest Man Alive. The following month, Harmon brought an end to his three-season stint on the medical drama television series St. Elsewhere. In this series, his character, Dr. Robert Caldwell, made history by becoming one of the first TV characters ever to die after contracting AIDS.
Following his departure from “St. Elsewhere”, Harmon astonished viewers by taking on the role of real-life murderer Ted Bundy in the 1986 four-hour television miniseries “The Deliberate Stranger”. In a stark contrast to the strong ethical and moral values that defined his legendary character Leroy Jethro Gibbs on “NCIS”, Harmon’s portrayal of Bundy was chilling, with elements of charm and sadism, as he is known to have kidnapped and killed over 30 women between 1974 and 1978.
In the shadow of Gibbs’ iconic role, Harmon’s chilling portrayal in “The Deliberate Stranger” stands out as perhaps the most gripping work of his acting career. Over the past three decades, Bundy has been portrayed in numerous films and TV shows, but Harmon’s depiction of Bundy’s cold-hearted evil in “The Deliberate Stranger” is unmatched in its convincing and unsettling accuracy.
Mark Harmon Reveals the Darkest Side in ‘The Deliberate Stranger’
In Seattle, on June 11, 1974, the film “The Deliberate Stranger” starts with the kidnapping of Georgann Hawkins (also known as Anne Pitney in the miniseries). This event occurred in a secluded alley behind her sorority house at the University of Washington. Months after taking her life, Ted Bundy, portrayed by Mark Harmon, admitted to finding partial remains of Hawkins before his execution via electrocution in 1989. However, despite these findings, Hawkins remains officially listed as a missing person, as she is presumed but not confirmed dead. Prior to this kidnapping, Bundy had already claimed the lives of at least five women in Oregon and Washington on his path to becoming one of history’s most notorious serial killers.
In my perspective as a movie critic, the initial scene of this production echoes the opening of Clint Eastwood’s 1984 suspenseful film, “Tightrope.” Similar to that movie, the character Bundy is subtly presented here, with his feet being the only visual clue to his presence.
In “The Deliberate Stranger,” Bundy is first portrayed as a charismatic law student, enjoying a blissful relationship with his single-mother partner. As this miniseries unfolds, we see that Bundy is preparing to depart from Washington state, where he had made numerous powerful political and social connections. However, little does one know, it’s in Utah that this seemingly charming character would commit more heinous acts.
In the ’80s, I found Ted Bundy’s youthful charm strikingly at odds with his sinister character, yet it was precisely this allure that made him so dangerously effective. His boyish good looks allowed him to carry out his chilling modus operandi with ease – feigning an injury to attract a young woman into his vehicle, only to brutally assault her unconscious body, transport her to a secluded spot, and ultimately take her life through sexual violence.
A disturbed past, similar to that of numerous infamous serial killers, paved the way for Ted Bundy’s notoriety as a serial killer. Bundy, who met his end in an electric chair on January 24, 1989, had a childhood marked by confusion as he was led to believe that his biological mother was his older sister and that his grandparents were his parents.
‘The Deliberate Stranger’ Shows Why Harmon Is the Consummate Television Star
Mark Harmon garnered outstanding feedback for his portrayal of Ted Bundy in “The Deliberate Stranger.” Following the acclaim of this miniseries, Harmon, like other notable 1980s TV stars such as Bruce Willis, Don Johnson, and Tom Selleck, endeavored to transition into feature films. This journey began with the 1987 comedy movie “Summer School.
Although Harmon’s pursuit of film stardom was hindered by limited suitable roles, critics who appreciated his TV performances, particularly in “The Deliberate Stranger”, opined that Harmon struggled to transfer his captivating 80s TV persona to the silver screen. This discrepancy is evident in the 1988 drama film “Stealing Home,” which underscores his lack of on-screen allure in feature films and demonstrates that while he excelled without flaw on television, Harmon has not been compelling as a leading man in movies.
Harmon’s Performance Remains the Most Frightening Portrayal of Ted Bundy
When Mark Harmon was chosen to portray Ted Bundy in “The Deliberate Stranger,” his initial thought was to journey to Florida, where Bundy had been executed in 1989, with the intention of conversing with the serial killer. However, he was persuaded against this idea and instead opted to engage with a Utah woman who had managed to evade Bundy, following her kidnapping and assault by him. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 1986, Harmon expressed playing Bundy as an intriguing test. He stated:
As I delve into the captivating world of “Extreme Oddity: The Ted Bundy Chronicles,” I find myself grappling with a character who defies simple categorization. He’s not just another psychopath; he’s a complex enigma that has baffled psychiatrists for 15 years. In my pursuit to unravel this intricate puzzle, I was denied the opportunity to meet him in person. Nevertheless, I am at peace with this, for I doubt I would have encountered the genuine Bundy. Instead, I presume I would have glimpsed the side that everyone else has seen – the charismatic facade.
In my roles, I often prefer portraying ordinary individuals, and in Ted Bundy, there lies a touch of normalcy. He could easily be your neighbor next door. In this film, I strive to bring forth not only his extraordinary actions but also the essence of his everyday self – a man who was, at one point, just like you and me.
