Reflecting upon Mark Wahlberg‘s recent journey, I find myself deeply moved by his relentless pursuit of new opportunities and his unwavering commitment to his family. His transition from the glamourous chaos of Los Angeles to the vibrant energy of Las Vegas mirrors a classic Hollywood tale, albeit with a modern twist.
Mark Wahlberg rolls deep.
Prior to the esteemed actor, producer, entrepreneur, and early riser (renowned for his gym workouts before sunrise) stepping onto the red carpet for the Monday debut of his Netflix action series The Union, Wahlberg’s influence was evident everywhere. Outside, a Wahlburgers food truck was positioned in the parking lot behind Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre, while inside, staff were stocking trays with meals from Wahlberg’s fast-food chain. Simultaneously, on the red carpet, associates of his (including his longtime manager and business partner Stephen Levinson) were seen moving about the press line, all dressed in clothing from Wahlberg’s expanding apparel brand, Municipal.
Mark Wahlberg, age 53, who acts alongside Halle Berry in the Julian Farino-directed film, stepped onto the set, casually dressed like a laid-back actor off-duty during the hot summer months. He wore a white t-shirt, utility pants, and Origin sneakers. In an unusual move for him, Wahlberg posed with most of his family, including his longtime wife Rhea and three out of their four children: Grace (14), Brendan (15), and Michael (18). Ella (20) was reportedly away at college during this time.
Approximately two years ago, the family relocated to Las Vegas, and since then, Wahlberg has been establishing strong ties with the intention of transforming this desert city into a modern version of Hollywood, dubbed “Hollywood 2.0.” This ambitious transformation is set in motion by a studio project in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Howard Hughes Holdings. As reported by The Las Vegas Review-Journal, these plans, approved by the Clark County Zoning Commission, involve constructing a $1.8 billion movie studio along with a mixed-use development within the Summerlin suburb of Vegas.
In a quick chat with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet for The Union, Wahlberg was eager to discuss the expansion of his business, which encompasses not just two production companies – Closest to the Hole and Unrealistic Ideas – but also Municipal, a tequila brand, Flecha Azul fitness centers, world-class training facilities, F45 gyms, a grooming line, and other endeavors.
“Wahlberg expressed that they have set lofty goals. He wants to create a business as successful as Lululemon, Nike, and Disney combined. With involvement in film, TV, technology, fitness, and even grooming, they aim to excel in every field they touch.”
Mark Wahlberg recently made an appearance in Los Angeles, approximately a month following the opening of the brand’s first physical store on bustling Melrose Avenue, which he and his associates Levinson and businessman Harry Arnett launched jointly. In his statements, Wahlberg expressed that their expansion plans are sky-high, and in past conversations, they have mentioned that around 10 stores will be established over the next 2 to 3 years, with a showroom poised to open shortly in Carlsbad, California.
“Wahlberg emphasized, ‘There’s no place you can’t begin from.’ He encouraged, ‘Think about where you could end up if you dare to believe in yourself. If you have a vision, you have a strategy, and you’re prepared to put in the effort and grind, anything is achievable.’ These words held significance as he was adorned with Municipal apparel, and he shared some insights about his fondness for these pieces (ranging from $30-$180). ‘The quality is exceptional, and it offers a fantastic value for every man. We encourage them to invest in themselves more; they deserve it because they work hard. They should look good and feel good.'”
Concerning the studio plans for Summerlin, Wahlberg expressed similar positivity, believing that if they manage to secure a tax credit in Nevada’s legislature, it could significantly benefit the local economy. Unfortunately, a previous proposal didn’t reach the House floor, but it’s said that a lawmaker will introduce a new tax credit plan next year.
“As a passionate advocate, I’m sharing the vision: this proposed venture will not only generate 10,000 new jobs right away but also significantly boost salaries from an average of $65,000 to $165,000. Additionally, it’s expected to instantly create 10,000 new single-family homes. Here’s the best part: we’re seeking a 10-year tax credit to establish a cutting-edge studio. Having filmed two movies in Las Vegas, I can vouch for the abundant talent – both on and off camera – and their eagerness to be part of this venture. We’ve already received plan approvals, and now we’re eagerly awaiting the approval of our tax credit at a special legislative session.”
Beyond professional matters, most news headlines about Wahlberg over the past two years have primarily revolved around his family’s decision to leave Los Angeles and settle in Las Vegas instead. As reported by People, they sold their high-end townhouse at the Summit Club for $16.6 million before moving into a new residence in the area.
When THR asked him about his life following several decades in L.A., there was a moment of contemplation as he surveyed the bustling red carpet and clear summer skies. “To be honest,” he admitted, “I’m longing for it here and now. I’ve always yearned for this place. However, ensuring that my growing teenagers are in a secure, healthy environment where they can flourish and chase their dreams has been my priority. We can return whenever we wish.”
They may not express it in the same words, but they do like Las Vegas just as much. For them, Vegas is more than just the Strip. It’s about discovering small, tight-knit communities with excellent schools, affordable housing, promising job opportunities, a thriving economy, and numerous sports teams. In their eyes, Las Vegas is an exciting place.
In Netflix’s series titled “The Union“, Mark Wahlberg portrays Mike, a man from New Jersey who leads an ordinary life as a construction worker. However, his tranquil existence is disrupted when his former high school sweetheart, Roxanne, played by Halle Berry, reappears with something other than romance on her mind. Believing he’s the perfect fit for the task, she persuades Mike to join her on a perilous intelligence mission in Europe. This adventure reunites them in a realm filled with spies and exhilarating car chases, sparking feelings between them all along the way. The ensemble cast includes Mike Colter, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jessica De Gouw, Alice Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, and J.K. Simmons.
The Union starts streaming on Netflix Aug. 16.
