As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over action-comedies, I must say that the news of a Blue Streak sequel has me both baffled and elated. Having grown up watching Martin Lawrence‘s antics on the silver screen, it feels like a piece of my childhood is being resurrected.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t hide my excitement when I share the news that Martin Lawrence, known for his roles in comedies and action films, is planning a sequel to one of his most critically panned yet audience-adored movies, “Blue Streak”. Originally an undercover cop, Lawrence is now looking to breathe new life into this action-comedy classic. Reports indicate that the project is currently in its early stages, with the working title being “Blue Streak 2”. Yes, it seems like we’re all as shocked (and a little thrilled) as each other!
Although neither a cast nor a director has been officially confirmed yet, it’s been disclosed that Cole Masika is currently crafting the screenplay for Blue Streak 2. It appears the project is just getting started, with no other talents involved at this early stage. Martin Lawrence is expected to reprise his role and produce the sequel through his company Run Tel Dat, along with Robert Lawrence, Rae Proctor, Stacy Lyles, Toby Jaffe from RDV Films, and possibly more producers.
Originally released in 1999, “Blue Streak” was helmed by director Les Mayfield and was actually based on a 1965 British comedy titled “The Big Job”. Starring Martin Lawrence along with Luke Wilson, Dave Chappelle, Peter Greene, Nicole Ari Parker, and William Forsythe, “Blue Streak” came after “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “Big Momma’s House” in Lawrence’s filmography. In this movie, Lawrence plays Miles, a thief who, after a botched diamond heist, hides the jewel at a construction site before getting arrested and sent to prison. Two years later, Miles reappears at the crime scene, now transformed into a police station…leading him to disguise as a cop, solve crimes, and simultaneously search for the hidden diamond.
With the outrageous stunts typical of Martin Lawrence, along with a traditional buddy cop tale, exciting action sequences, numerous laughs, and an odious villain played by Peter Greene from The Mask, fans of Blue Streak (yes, there are quite a few of us!) can now rejoice.
What Might Blue Streak 2 Be About?
Currently, we’re clueless about the plot of Blue Streak 2. To be honest, we’re still wrapping our heads around its existence! However, given the ending of the first movie where Miles, the skilled thief, is on the run with the diamond after being released by Detective Carlson (played by Luke Wilson), it’s likely that he’ll be drawn back into action. Will Detective Carlson find himself in trouble during a mission in Mexico? Or will an event force Miles to return to the United States? All we can do is wait and find out.
Back in early 2021, I had the pleasure of teaming up once more with Will Smith for the blockbuster action-comedy follow-up, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”. This movie was a sensation among both critics and viewers, raking in an impressive $404 million globally and sparking whispers about another installment featuring our iconic Bad Boys. Without a doubt, I’m eager to rekindle that magic with the long-overdue sequel of “Blue Streak”.
