At the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 7th, co-creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg unveiled their Apple TV+ series. They subsequently participated in a Q&A session following the screening, along with several cast members of this highly talented ensemble. Although Martin Scorsese was absent despite his cameo appearance, Rogen provided some behind-the-scenes insights about collaborating with him on the satirical comedy.
As reported by Variety, Rogen shared an unexpected and humorous comment made by Scorsese to him and Goldberg. In a twist of events, the director, known for his use of profanity in films, expressed concern that their use of swear words was excessive. “You two use ‘f*’ too much,” he said, leaving Rogen and Goldberg, partners on projects like Superbad, Neighbors, and The Boys, slightly puzzled. According to Rogen, their reaction was, “We use ‘f*’ too much?!
Martin Scorsese is not timid about incorporating strong language in his films, frequently featuring characters with colorful vocabularies who find themselves in challenging situations that significantly increase the frequency of swearing. The R-rated crime epic “The Wolf of Wall Street” generated controversy upon its 2013 release due to its extensive use of profanity, setting a world record for the most uses of the “F-word,” with over 500 instances scattered throughout the film’s nearly three-hour duration. Scorsese’s other films, like “Casino” and “Goodfellas”, are not far behind in terms of their swear word tallies either.
‘The Studio’ Scored Big With Martin Scorsese
As I take my seat at the cinema, I find myself squarely in the glaring limelight of Seth Rogen, who, as per the series summary, steps into the role of Matt Remick, a man newly installed at the helm of struggling Continental Studios. In this position, he’s forced to grapple with a motley crew of self-absorbed artists and ruthless corporate honchos, all while unveiling the gruesome inner workings of Tinseltown – the Hollywood meat grinder.
In a recent Q&A session, Rogen made it clear that he and Goldberg aimed to deliver an authentic portrayal of today’s film industry and sought to cast actors we’d expect to see at the helm of a studio. To that end, they recruited the crème de la crème of Tinseltown talent for their 10-episode half-hour comedy series.
They contacted both friends and strangers alike and were amazed at the number of famous figures they managed to get involved. Among these, Scorsese, the renowned director, was particularly notable, both on-screen and off. This iconic filmmaker had a lot to say about The Studio, but Rogen eagerly accepted his advice, confessing that he and Goldberg couldn’t believe Scorsese agreed to make an appearance in their series.
I had never crossed paths with Martin Scorsese prior to this occasion. When we discovered he was involved in the project, we were taken aback! However, we put in a lot of effort to create roles that we hoped would be humorous and resonate with audiences. Ultimately, what we found is that everyone craves a good laugh. It’s incredibly appealing to people to feel like they can be amusing. Even Charlize [Theron], we reassured, “It’s just one line, but it will be hilarious, we swear!
Alongside Scorsese, The Studio boasts a star-studded cast including Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Olivia Wilde, Adam Scott, Anthony Mackie, Zoë Kravitz, Charlize Theron, Ron Howard, Bryan Cranston, Zac Efron, Paul Dano, Steve Buscemi, Johnny Knoxville, and Josh Hutcherson. These famous figures will portray exaggerated versions of themselves in the series. The series has already received rave reviews before its premiere on Apple TV+ on March 26. It is scheduled to release two episodes initially, followed by a new episode every Wednesday thereafter.
