Martin Scorsese Had a Lot of Opinions About the Directing in Seth Rogen's New Comedy Series

As a devoted cinephile and follower of the illustrious careers of cinematic greats, it is an absolute delight to witness the extraordinary collaborative efforts that transpire within the industry. Martin Scorsese, a living legend whose contributions to the world of film are immeasurable, graced our screens once more in Seth Rogen’s latest comedy series, The Studio.

In spring 2025, Seth Rogen’s latest comedy series titled The Studio will be available on AppleTV+. This entertaining show features a collection of famous personalities portraying the most outrageous versions of themselves you can imagine. The lineup includes Anthony Mackie, Adam Scott, Ron Howard, Zack Snyder, and many others such as Olivia Wilde, Zoë Kravitz, Charlize Theron, and Ice Cube.

Among the distinguished guest stars, one truly shone brighter than the rest, not just on screen but off as well: Martin Scorsese, a respected figure in the world of directing, producing, and occasionally acting. His role is pivotal to the overall narrative, which revolves around Seth Rogen’s character, Matt Remick, who is secretly making a movie that turns out to be an extended advertisement for Kool-Aid.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Rogen and his collaborator Goldberg shared that working with such a renowned director was indeed nerve-wracking for them. To avoid appearing inexperienced, they opted to film his scene using just one camera instead of multiple setups.

Rogen mentions that we secretly kept a backup camera team hidden in another room, ready if there were problems with the filming method. Fortunately, he responded positively, saying it was similar to the French New Wave style, and was eager to proceed in that manner.

Even though Scorsese kept his thoughts to himself, he did have some suggestions about the scene’s progression. Goldberg observed that Scorsese was frequently whispering to one of the other actors, prompting him to ask, “What were you whispering about all this time…?” Scorsese replied, “You were doing something wrong, and I was waiting for you to do the right thing. Eventually, you did the right thing. However, I didn’t want to interrupt because I didn’t want to be impolite. I knew you would figure it out eventually.

In ‘The Studio,’ I find myself in the shoes of Seth Rogen’s character, Matt Remick – the freshly appointed head of a struggling Continental Studios. Amidst movies that are fighting to stay alive and relevant, my team and I engage in a tumultuous struggle against our own insecurities. We wrestle with narcissistic artists and greedy corporate entities, all while chasing the elusive dream of producing exceptional films.
