As a cinephile with a penchant for all things cinematic, I must say that 2025 is shaping up to be a truly exciting year at the box office! With two of Hollywood’s brightest stars, Timothée Chalamet and Sydney Sweeney, going head-to-head on Christmas Day next year, it’s hard not to feel the anticipation building.
Make way for Chalaweeney, taking center stage next Christmas courtesy of A24, as they’ve scheduled Timothée Chalamet’s ping-pong biopic, Marty Supreme, for release on December 25, 2025. The news dropped yesterday that Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried’s thriller, The Housemaid, will also hit theaters on Christmas day next year. This means that two of today’s hottest Hollywood stars, Chalamet and Sweeney, are set to face off at the box office. Unless one of them decides to step aside first.
Next year on that special occasion, Timothée Chalamet’s “Marty Supreme” will debut, boasting an impressive ensemble of A-listers such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler the Creator, Fran Drescher, Penn Jillette, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, and Sandra Bernard. Directed by Josh Safdie, this film is a captivating exploration of the extraordinary journey of Marty Reisman, a ping-pong champion in the 1950s, produced by A24. Notably, it ranks among A24’s costliest productions, sharing the spotlight with Dwayne Johnson’s “The Smashing Machine,” another A24 production directed by Josh Safdie’s brother, Benny Safdie.
Conversely, Sweeny’s movie titled “The Housemaid” is adapted from the 2022 novel by Freida McFadden. The lead role of Millie, a woman seeking a fresh start, is played by the talented actress we know as Immaculate. She finds employment as a housemaid for the wealthy couple Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew. However, she discovers that the family’s hidden truths are more perilous than her own. The film is helmed by director Paul Feig. If it does well at the box office, there are two additional novels in McFadden’s series that could potentially serve as sequels.
Who Will Reign Supreme at the Box Office Next Christmas?
Indeed, as both Chalamet and Sweeney are set to premiere their movies on Christmas Day 2025, the question arises: who will rule the box office. However, neither of them will be the one to reign supreme. Despite their significant appeal – which is undeniably present to an extent – they can’t compare to the legendary James Cameron, whose movie will debut a week prior. You might have heard about it? It goes by the name Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Correct, the long-awaited third installment of Cameron’s Avatar series is scheduled for release on December 19, 2025. This means it’s highly unlikely that either Chalamet or Sweeney will claim the top spot at the box office. Instead, they’ll likely be competing for second place. However, it’s worth mentioning that Universal is also developing an unnamed event film that might debut around Christmas as well, which could significantly impact the situation.
I speculate that either A24 or Lionsgate might choose a more prudent approach and shift the release dates for “Marty Supreme” or “The Housemaid”. However, it’s uncertain as of now since the Christmas box office is quite competitive. The interesting twist is that Timothée Chalamet will face competition this holiday season, particularly with Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu”, which coincides with his Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown”, on Dec. 25th. Ultimately, it seems the real beneficiaries are moviegoers, who are feasting on some fantastic films at the moment.
