In “Marvel Knights: The World to Come” #1, a fresh character has been unveiled by Marvel Comics, and their true identity brings an unexpected surprise. Spanning over six issues, this comic book series unfolds within the future timeline of the Marvel Universe.
In “The World To Come,” a fresh take on the Marvel Universe is presented by Christopher Priest, who has previously worked on “Black Panther.” The story begins within the borders of Wakanda. Notably, the debut issue introduces a stunningly new character, who will eventually assume the mantle of Black Panther following T’Challa’s advanced age. As a tribal contest for leadership unfolds in Wakanda, the issue reveals an enigmatic winner taking over as the new ruler, heralding “The World to Come.” Interestingly, this mysterious figure seems to be of Caucasian descent.
Black Panther’s Son Looks White in The World To Come Comics
In “The World To Come”, readers are privy to a narrative that spans the past, present, and future, delving into events leading up to T’Challa’s demise. During a power struggle for the throne, Black Panther confronts his adversary Ketema with the words, “Hush now, Ketema. You are my son.” As anticipated, the aged T’Challa ultimately succumbs in battle against Ketema, and he proclaims himself victorious. However, when he removes his mask, it becomes apparent that this character possesses fair skin, golden hair, and blue eyes.
It’s yet to be revealed in future editions of “The World to Come,” how Marvel will introduce a white character as T’Challa’s son and potential king of Wakanda. The cover of issue #3 may keep this character’s identity concealed. The artwork suggests that T’Challa has two sons, possibly implying that the one who defeated T’Challa in combat could be the offspring of Nicole Adams, a character from the April 1970’s “Avengers” #77, who previously had romantic ties with T’Challa during his time studying in the U.S.
Introducing a white Black Panther certainly stirs controversy, as the character of Black Panther is usually lauded for its representation of black culture. Typically, all aspects of Wakanda are rooted in Afrofuturism, and past characters who have assumed the role of Black Panther within Marvel comics have traditionally been black, such as Killmonger and Storm. Although Captain America once donned the suit, it was primarily to assist his friend, mentoring and preparing T’Challa for teamwork rather than claiming the title as his own.
Readers may not need to wait much longer for insights into the real identity of T’Challa’s successor. The synopsis for The World to Come #2 hints, “The origins of The World to Come are unveiled! What transpired in Mexico? How is Everett K. Ross involved? And who will be the next ruler of Wakanda?” The issue becomes available on July 16.
The World to Come #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
