Marvel Rivals Fans Will Need More Patience for Switch 2

Despite Marvel Rivals being among this year’s top competitive shooter games that fans are flocking to, there’s currently no way for those eager to play it on the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 as of now.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that other gaming platforms are continuously rolling out seasonal updates and introducing fresh heroes, which is fantastic! However, when it comes to the anticipated Switch 2, it seems like the development team isn’t quite ready to jumpstart things just yet, and it’s not due to any technical hurdles.

NetEase doesn’t yet have the hardware needed to start working on the game.

Is NetEase Interested in Bringing the Game to Switch 2?

The creators of Marvel Rivals have openly expressed their desire to launch the game on Nintendo’s latest device, which combines both handheld and console functionality.

As reported by game director Guangyun Chen, our team is currently making efforts to acquire a development kit specifically designed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, at this point in time, Nintendo has yet to provide us with such a kit.

NetEase requires the development kit for them to initiate any work on porting the game, not even early testing is possible. The hold-up isn’t unique to Marvel Rivals; developers worldwide are finding Nintendo’s selectiveness in distributing Switch 2 development kits to be frustrating.

Established studios have found themselves in a holding pattern, causing a delay in the release of new video game adaptations on other platforms.

Can the Switch 2 Handle Marvel Rivals?

That said, the Switch 2 is more than capable of running a game like Marvel Rivals on paper.

Using advanced equipment and incorporating contemporary rendering methods such as DLSS, it represents a notable improvement over its previous version. Nonetheless, it’s essential for the developers to ensure optimal performance, given that Marvel Rivals leverages Unreal Engine 5, which is known for being quite demanding on the original Switch.

Initially, NetEase contemplated launching Marvel Rivals on the original Nintendo Switch, however, they soon abandoned this plan upon realizing that the system’s hardware wasn’t capable of providing a reliable gaming experience consistently.

When Could a Port Actually Happen?

It’s possible that the launch will take place no later than the end of 2025; however, it’s more likely that we’ll see it in early 2026 if progress doesn’t accelerate.

Essentially, Switch 2 appears to have potential, but NetEase needs to acquire the development kit initially before they can begin working on it. Keep in mind that converting a contemporary, competitive shooter game for a fresh console isn’t simply about duplicating and pasting; it requires time and patience.

Refining this process involves several months of careful calibration, internal trials, balancing, possibly reworking the user interface on the handheld device, and then adding certification and updates to the software. This extended period includes all those steps.

Currently, Marvel Rivals is playable on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. For now, we’re all eagerly awaiting any updates regarding its potential release on the Nintendo Switch 2. The game certainly seems capable of making the transition, it’s just a matter of when development for that platform can commence.
