As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit, I’m absolutely thrilled about Marvel Rivals. The multiverse concept and the four distinct timelines promise a rich, immersive gaming experience that I haven’t seen since the days of Chrono Trigger.
As a devoted Marvel enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at how Marvel Rivals seamlessly integrates the multiverse into its gameplay. This means we get to see characters hailing from diverse realms and epochs!
Based on the unveiling of the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda’s map, NetEase has simultaneously disclosed four primary storylines that will serve as sources for the game’s characters.
Four Main Timelines of Season One
In a freshly unveiled clip, Marvel Rivals’ lead designer, Guangguang, disclosed that the inaugural season of the game will delve into four distinct timeframes. These include:
- 2099: Techno-Dystopia
- Present Day
- Mosaic Timeline: Unstable Space-Time
- Collapsing: Even the Gods Die
So far, there have only been five maps revealed for the game, including:
- Yggsgard: Royal Palaca
- Yggsgard: Yggdrasill Path
- Tokyo 2099: Shin-Shibuya
- Tokyo 2099: Spider-Islands
- Wakanda Birnin T’Challa (Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda)
Based on the existing maps, it’s quite clear that Tokyo 2099 is set within a Techno-Dystopian future, while perhaps Yggsgard, which seems to be a blend of Asgard and the World Tree Yggdrasil, unfolds in a timeline that’s on the brink of collapse.
It appears that the Present Day timeline might closely resemble the mainstream Marvel universe. In contrast, the Mosaic timeline could offer more flexibility – this may be where the Wakandan Intergalactic Empire is set, considering Wakanda’s reputation as a secret society rather than an interstellar empire.
8 Maps, 33 Characters
According to the developer’s update, players can anticipate that there will be 8 maps available when the game launches in December. However, there are still 3 more maps yet to be disclosed. It remains uncertain whether NetEase plans to keep these details under wraps until the official launch day. Additionally, the game promises 33 playable characters at launch, but only 27 have been unveiled so far. We’ll find out if the team can manage to introduce the remaining maps and characters before the release.
We haven’t definitively figured out what lies ahead just yet, but there are those who think they might be waiting for notable X-Men characters such as Wolverine and Cyclops to appear. A variety of Marvel locations could potentially serve as fascinating map themes, including the X-Men’s notorious Danger Room, the Guardians of the Galaxy’s HQ Knowhere, or even the familiar neighborhood of Queens where Spider-Man typically resides.
A Long-Awaited Hit
With Marvel Games trailing behind WB for quite some time, Marvel Rivals seems like an eagerly anticipated release. After years of just the Spider-Man series thriving as a successful franchise, fans are expecting this new game to offer an exceptional Game of the Year experience that matches the prestige of the Marvel brand.
Coincidentally, the moment is opportune because DC suffered a significant setback following the debut of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League“. With the disappointment caused by “Marvel’s Avengers“, the arrival of “Marvel Rivals” seems to be the game that Marvel is desperately counting on to turn things around.
Thus far, feedback on the beta testing of Rivals has been favorable. The creators at NetEase can draw insights from similar games to Overwatch, such as Paladins and Valorant, to refine their own project.
Marvel Rivals launches for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 on Dec. 6.
