Marvel Shares An Exclusive What If…? Scene That Gives Off Serious Back To The Future 3 Vibes, And I’m Loving It

As a dedicated Marvel fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of these extraordinary characters, I must say that this third season of What If…? is truly a delightful surprise. The way they’re weaving in elements from upcoming movies and shows, such as the Thunderbolts and Ironheart, adds an exciting layer of anticipation for us fans.

This upcoming season of the Marvel animated series, “What If…?”, promises significant importance for its fans who subscribe to Disney+. Notably, this season will mark the conclusion of the show’s original episodes after three runs. So far, it has ventured into exciting new territories, such as an anime-inspired episode in Season 3 Episode 1 and a 1930s musical tribute in Episode 2. Marvel Studios has given us an exclusive look at Episode 6, where Shang-Chi (played by Simu Liu) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) find themselves transported to the old west – specifically, 1872. Check out this sneak peek of the episode that’s due to premiere on Disney+ streaming service on Friday, December 27.

If this clip gives you a strong sense of the “Back to the Future Part 3” feel, you’re not alone! It features Shang-Chi meeting John Walker (Wyatt Russell), a character we expect to see often as the 2025 movies approach theaters. We already know that U.S. Agent will team up with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and Red Guardian (David Harbour) in the Thunderbolts. However, it’s unclear what mission Valentina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has assigned them. Given Lewis Pullman’s role as Sentinel in “Top Gun: Maverick,” I suspect this character might be involved somehow.

Although it’s still uncertain what Episode 6 of What If…? will cover, Marvel Studios has shared a sneak peek hinting at a typical Western showdown scene. In this instance, John Walker, the villain, misjudges our heroes’ capabilities. Suddenly, they spring into action, swiftly defeating the adversary with expert kicks, punches, and well-aimed shots from a six-shooter that seems to never miss, all under Hawkeye’s control.

It’s intriguing to note how Season 3 of What If…? has given more attention to Marvel characters appearing in future films and series, such as Red Guardian, John Walker, and even introducing The Hood in this episode. In the upcoming Ironheart, Anthony Ramos will portray The Hood. I wish these episodes could have introduced The Fantastic Four or The X-Men, but perhaps we’ll see them in potential future seasons of the show, if these teams are ever to be featured.

New episodes of What If…? drop daily until the finale on Sunday, December 29.
