The restriction on sharing information about “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” on social media has been lifted, and based on initial feedback, it appears that Marvel Animation is making a strong comeback after the less than impressive finale of “What If…?”. Originally announced as “Spider-Man Freshman Year” in November 2021, this project has gone through several transformations, from being a direct prequel to the MCU to becoming a standalone production. After four years of development, the series is now scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on January 29, 2025, and early reviews are positive.
The general feedback on the ten-episode run of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” has been overwhelmingly positive. Critics have praised the animation and storytelling for faithfully representing different eras of the Spider-Man comic series. Eric Goldman, a writer for IGN and Fandom, shared on Bluesky that he found the show to be enjoyable, stating it skillfully draws inspiration from iconic versions of the story while also establishing its unique feel. The energy is lively, the tales are entertaining, and it serves as a reminder of just how brilliant Spider-Man’s character is, according to Goldman. Jenna Anderson, co-host of Phase Zero podcast and host of Go Read Some Comics With Jenna, echoed similar sentiments.
I adore the blend in #YourFriendlyNeighborhoodSpiderMan of Ditko art, Toth animation, and teen dramas, creating a mix that’s both timeless and refreshingly contemporary. The diverse cast is a joy to watch, and Colman Domingo as Norman Osborn is simply brilliant. I can’t wait for more seasons!”
Or, if you want to keep the original hashtag: “#YourFriendlyNeighborhoodSpiderMan seamlessly combines elements of Ditko art, Toth animation, and teen dramas, resulting in a timeless yet modern masterpiece. The ensemble cast is a blast, and Colman Domingo’s portrayal of Norman Osborn is outstanding. I’d happily watch six more seasons straight away.
‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Is a Worthy ‘X-Men ’97’ Follow-Up
2025 looks set to be an action-packed year for Marvel fans, following a quieter 2024. After one movie, two TV series on Disney+, and two animated shows, the upcoming lineup promises to make up for lost time. Kicking off the animated series schedule is the return of everyone’s favorite web-slinger in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.” Following closely behind will be “Eyes of Wakanda” in August and “Marvel Zombies” in October. The live-action slate includes the comeback of Daredevil in “Daredevil: Born Again,” the debut of Ironheart, Wonder Man, and the highly anticipated “Captain America: Brave New World.” Additionally, the feature film lineup will also feature “Thunderbolts” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The animated series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” seems to be a success for Marvel Animation and could follow in the footsteps of “X-Men ’97”. Similar to “X-Men ’97”, some viewers initially criticized its animation style, but as with the X-Men series, they might have been hasty in their judgment. Fans of Spider-Man have been quite critical of previous animated Spider-Man series since the end of “Spectacular Spider-Man” in 2009, with “Ultimate Spider-Man” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man” falling short of expectations. If word of mouth is any indicator, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” might be the series that longtime Spider-Man fans have been eagerly waiting for years.
