‘Masters of the Universe’ Rumored to Change He-Man to Office Worker from Earth

As a longtime fan who grew up with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, I must admit that the latest news about the upcoming live-action film has left me both intrigued and slightly apprehensive. On one hand, I’m excited to see this classic franchise brought to life on the big screen once again, and the cast they’ve assembled is nothing short of impressive. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for Dolph Lundgren’s iconic portrayal of He-Man in the 1987 film.

The upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe film has been generating buzz recently, particularly due to Jared Leto’s casting as the antagonist Skeletor. Following this news, and other casting updates, rumors have surfaced that the movie could feature a plot twist so significant, it might make Leto’s casting seem minor in comparison. If insider Daniel Richtman’s sources are accurate, then the upcoming Masters of the Universe film may be planning to drastically alter the 1987 Dolph Lundgren movie by portraying He-Man as an ordinary Earthling instead of a powerful hero from Eternia. This potential change could certainly stir up fans in an unexpected way.

Up until now, the announcements regarding casting have indicated that this upcoming live-action movie is intended to be truer to the original toy line and ’80s cartoon compared to Lundgren’s well-known film adaptation. However, recent speculation by Richtman proposes a contrasting approach; unlike the previous movie which largely neglected Eternia for financial reasons, setting most of its action on Earth, this new movie might present “Prince Adam” as an ordinary office worker in reality. His only understanding of Eternia would stem from childhood tales.

In this situation, it’s unclear how the character will transform into Eternia’s muscle-man, as Richtman only heard rumors about it. However, this significant shift from the original story could potentially be a brilliant move or risk losing a substantial chunk of the 40-year-old fanbase who have eagerly anticipated the live-action He-Man’s return to screens for quite some time.

Does He-Man Need a New Origin Story?

One point to consider when reimagining old stories is that significantly altering established characters or storylines that have sustained a series for decades might be risking unnecessary change, similar to playing with fire. For instance, in Dolph Lundgren’s portrayal of He-Man, his Prince Adam persona was absent from the start of the film, yet the new movie could potentially ignore He-Man’s connection to the Ertean royal family altogether, providing a contemporary reinterpretation of the narrative that relies on the familiar fish-out-water motif often used in many “reimagined” adaptations.

The upcoming movie features an impressive lineup of actors, including Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, and Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms. Recently, Jared Leto has joined the cast as Skeletor, Sam C. Wilson is set to play Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson will bring Goat Man to life, and Kojo Attah will portray Tri-Klops with his multiple eyes. Keep an eye out for further casting announcements and plot details as Masters of the Universe moves closer to its release date on June 5, 2026.
